Boston University’s College of Fine Arts invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Music Theatre, non-tenure-track, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.

CFA’s School of Theatre is a prominent beacon for the arts in New England. With accomplished, award-winning alumni (including actors Jason Alexander, Geena Davis, Julianne Moore, Alfre Woodard, and Ginnifer Goodwin); five dedicated theatres, including the stunning state-of-the-art Booth Theatre; 40 faculty who are actively engaged in the profession of theatre-making, CFA’s School of Theatre is widely recognized as one of the premier theatre programs in the nation.

The successful candidate will teach in the School’s BFA Performance Department undergraduate and graduate programs and advise students on projects and productions specifically focused in the area of Music Theatre. Applicants should possess a strong background in music theatre and music directing & accompaniment, a knowledge of the music theatre canon as well as a passion for developing new work, and remaining current in the field with regard to evolving styles, techniques, and repertoire.  The candidate should also possess a willingness to work with a collaborative spirit within a team of faculty with varied approaches, and a proven ability to teach beginning and advanced Music Theatre courses.

Qualifications include significant professional experience in accompanying/teaching/coaching. The successful candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of repertoire and styles of music theatre (including pop, rock, country, and rap/spoken word), knowledge of classical vocal repertoire, and strong sight-reading skills. Proficiency with Finale and MainStage software programs, and experience in arranging is desired. Applicants should submit a letter of intent, a CV, an outline of their creative and teaching accomplishments including a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion philosophy and experience, and three letters of recommendation. 

The ideal candidate will teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, fostering critical study, creative practice, and provocation in the classroom and beyond. Applicants must hold a terminal degree and/or have a significant record of professional accomplishments in the field. We are looking for candidates with strong skills in collaboration and communication, as well as professional networks to help bridge classroom experiences and the profession. Prior teaching experience is desirable.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Terminal degree or an equivalent record of professional accomplishments in the field
  • A record of professional accomplishments that merit a professorial rank appointment at the Boston University
  • Evidence of supporting, teaching, and/or mentoring emerging artists in the classroom and the field
  • Evidence of successfully promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion 
  • Proficiency in piano and orchestral conducting/accompaniment/coaching
  • A commitment to shared governance
  • A dedication to collaboration

  • Experience teaching graduate or undergraduate students
  • Experience in curriculum development

  • A commitment to new work
