Summary
Shop Supervisor will assist the technical director with the purchase of lumber and construction materials, read scale drawings and designs, supervise the construction of all scenery and props for theatrical productions, train student crews in the safe operation of the tools, materials and techniques used in the scene shop and supervise the load-in and setup of scenic elements in the Wallace Theatre. The shop Foreman will work a full-time schedule with flexible hours to accommodate the availability of student crews and production deadlines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Supervise the construction, painting, move-in, and assembly of scenic and prop elements of theatrical department productions.
2. Develop construction and move-in schedules for theatrical department productions.
3. Maintain all shop, storage and theatre spaces in an orderly, clean, safe manner, returning all set pieces and props to storage after completion of productions.
4. Work hours will follow a flexible schedule with start times adjusted to accommodate student crew availability.
5. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
6. Schedule the construction of scenery within an intensive production environment to meet rigid completion deadlines.
7. Supervise the training of student workers on the safe and proper use of shop tools, equipment, and hardware used in the construction of scenery and props.
8. Foster a safe, Christ-centered working environment in keeping with the greater mission of California Baptist University.
9. California Driver’s License and willingness to drive university vehicles including pickup and 12’- 16’ stake trucks.
10. Adjust work week start and end times, as required, to meet demands of evening and weekend rehearsal, production schedules and student worker availabilities. Supervisory Responsibilities
This position could be responsible for assigning work and/or giving direction to part-time Student Workers, in order to complete work assignments. Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
§ Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to building theatrical production scenery and props i.e. table saw, miter saw, router, shaper, band saw, radial arm saw, drill press, paint spray guns and cordless screw guns.
§ Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects.
§ Knowledge and experience in general building tasks and procedures.
§ Ability to read scale drawings and designs.
§ Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.
§ Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
§ Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body.
§ Ability to regularly lift up to fifty (50) pounds of weight.
§ Ability to have a flexible schedule that is mandated by the needs of the production schedule.
§ Ability to supervise and train student workers and volunteers, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
§ Strong organizational skills and detail oriented approach to the construction and finish of stage scenery and props.
§ Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments in a timely manner.
Education and/or Experience
Vocational / technical training in a directly related building craft area with 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
