Senior Research Analyst - Office of Institutional Research



General Summary

The Institutional Research department provides ongoing analysis of student, employee, and community data to enable Highline College to become more equitable, inclusive, and representative of its community in its learning environments, programs, services, and partnerships. The Senior Research Analyst works under the general direction of the Director of Institutional Research. The analyst will collaborate with a diverse group of administrators, faculty, and staff from across the institution on work that supports data driven decision making and helps us achieve our equity-focused strategic goals. This position will be responsible for research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation in addition to providing leadership to cross campus teams.

This is an Exempt full-time position. Hours of work may include evening, weekend and travel.

Essential Tasks

Under the direction of the Director of Institutional Research this position will:
  • Independently lead a variety of institutional research projects. Clarify research questions and specific information needs; ensure methods follow federal guidelines; use appropriate research methods; identify data sources; determine appropriate level of detail and interpret results; summarize findings and implications; respond to questions and requests for information;
  • Conduct complex statistical analysis to support institutional effectiveness;
  • Provide written, graphical and oral presentations of research, customized for the intended audience;
  • Lead the Guided Pathways Research Team; provide direction and coordinate activities of this cross-campus team of faculty fellows and other researchers; collaborate with other Guided Pathways teams to ensure that they receive the data and analyses needed to inform their work;
  • Coordinate administration and analysis of surveys and focus groups as part of the college’s efforts to incorporate student input and feedback into continuous improvement of services and learning environments;
  • Lead campus efforts to increase data literacy among faculty and staff by building a culture of continuous, effective and ethical interpretation of multiple types of data;
  • Collaborate with IT staff to evaluate and implement new technologies for data warehousing, analysis, and display;
  • Serve on college-wide committees as needed;
  • Participate in the activities of the Research and Planning Commission of the WA State Board for Community and Technical Colleges;
  • May supervise part-time staff.
Competencies:
Technical Competencies:
  • Demonstrated experience in, and extensive knowledge of, both quantitative and qualitative analysis and assessment using statistics and applied research methodologies;
  • Demonstrated experience disaggregating data and viewing data with a racial equity lens;
  • Demonstrated competence with statistical software, spreadsheets, pivot tables, and database querying software, complex relational databases, data warehousing, data management, and development of queries in PeopleSoft or similar Enterprise Resource Planning system to extract data from multiple, complex data sets;
  • Demonstrated usage of SQL or other program language to extract and merge complex data sets;
  • Experience creating documents, spreadsheets, databases and visualizations to prepare reports and present statistical analysis.
Organizational skills/time management:
  • Experience prioritizing multiple tasks and projects to meet ongoing and sometimes competing deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and make appropriate decisions or judgments relating to complex research projects;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to respond effectively to end users' data needs.
Interpersonal and communication skills:
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain successful and effective relationships with a diverse, multicultural staff and student population;
  • Ability to lead teams of diverse colleagues from a variety of disciplines and divisions;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to effectively convey complex ideas and information using language that is appropriate to both the complexity of the topic and the knowledge and understanding of the audience.

Ability to:
  • Use statistical software, spreadsheets, pivot tables, and database querying software (i.e. Access, Excel, SQL Server or other relational database software);
  • Transform raw data into informative and usable information;
  • Design and produce accessible charts, tables and dashboards using Tableau or other visualization software;
  • Communicate clearly with excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Write and present information in a clear and concise manner;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity working with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic and cultural backgrounds;
  • Prioritize projects and tasks independently and meet deadlines;
  • Work collaboratively with the college and larger community.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Statistics, Public Administration, Business Administration, Social Science, Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field; AND
  • Minimum three years recent research experience, preferably in educational institutional research, including independently leading research projects, with focus on research design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation; AND
  • Specialized training in statistical analysis, database programs, and related software packages that include statistical techniques.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree;
  • Experience in a community college setting;
  • Experience using Tableau or other BI tools;
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Conditions of Employment
Highline College does require COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, staff and faculty –– with waivers for specific exemptions –– for those who physically attend courses, operations, or other in-person activities. This decision was made in accordance with higher education proclamation 20-12.4. A candidate will not be asked to report their vaccination status unless they are hired by the college.
