Summary Description:
Under direction from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, leads, oversees, and performs the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for diagnosing, performing maintenance, and repairing automotive and other power-driven equipment; oversees the daily operation of the transportation repair function; plans repairs and preventive maintenance of college vehicles and equipment; ensures college owned vehicles and equipment are maintained to safe standards for staff and student use; and maintains a variety of records including vehicle repair and inventory documents. Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the lead level class in the Automotive Diagnostic Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including the provision of functional and technical supervision over assigned staff. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. Representative Duties:

Operations, services, and activities of a fleet maintenance and repair program.
Principles of lead supervision and training.
Computerized diagnostic equipment and other tools and equipment used in troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions in gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
Modern methods and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, maintenance and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
Operation, repair and maintenance of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment.
Operation, maintenance and repair procedures and ability to apply them to specific repairs and work schedules.
Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
Methods and techniques of performing diagnostic troubleshooting services.
Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.
Methods, materials, practices and tools of equipment repair.
Operational characteristics of standard automotive equipment.

Independently perform the most difficult automotive maintenance and repair duties.

Plan vehicle usage to avoid out of stock down time.
Make operational and mechanical decisions.
Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
Order and replace malfunctioning parts as needed.
Use computerized and other testing and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and perform minor and major maintenance and repairs accordingly.
Learn and understand new electronic and computer controlled fuel emissions systems.
Test, adjust, maintain and repair mechanical, air, hydraulic, air conditioning and electrical systems, including integrated, complex and technical, computerized systems involving engine, electronic fuel Injection, emission controls, electronic overdrive transmissions, anti-lock brakes and electronic climate control.
Operate computers and other electronic diagnostic and testing equipment and tools used to maintain and repair vehicles.
Perform a variety of welding work.
Safely and effectively operate a variety of power and hand tools used in heavy and light equipment repair.
Maintain clean and orderly work areas.
Maintain a variety of records and reports related to work performed.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the varied racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, academic, socio-economic, and disabled populations of community college students.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience Guidelines:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in the troubleshooting, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles including integrated, complex and technical, computerized systems involving engine, electronic fuel injection, emission controls, electronic overdrive transmissions, anti-lock brakes and electronic climate control. Experience:
Three years of journey-level experience performing a full range of skilled maintenance and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, including integrated, complex and technical, computerized systems involving engine, electronic fuel injection, emission controls, electronic overdrive transmissions, anti-lock brakes and electronic climate control. License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license and proof of insurability. Possession of an EPA certificate is desirable. Conditions of Employment:

Work Environment:
Work is performed in a shop environment; occasional field environment with some travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Occasional exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions. Positions may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Physical Demands:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Additional Position Information:
