Master’s degree or equivalent in public administration or related field required. Position Summary
The Local Government Unit assists cities, counties, local government authorities by supplying them with information, presentations, and written reports that serve as management tools to aid in decision making. The work often involves providing guidance on best practices in local government management or operations. Different types of projects include strategic plans that guide future decision making and organizational reviews that determine if principles such as span of control and separation of duties have been effectively employed. The research conducted often involves interviewing local government employees and officials to learn how they operate and address ongoing challenges. This position will report to the Local Government unit manager. This position requires travel. The position will spend considerable time working directly with state and local officials, both elected, appointed, and staff. Thus, it is critical that the candidate possess the desire, ability, and background to interact in a very objective, positive and supportive manner with these important clients of the Institute of Government. Incumbent must be able to function effectively in an interdisciplinary environment. Must have extensive knowledge of local government issues. Must be able to effectively work alone, as a team member, or as a project lead. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for client interactions and presentations. Provide technical assistance and consultation and perform applied research as needed. Background working in a local government setting is preferred.

Responsibilities:
• Provide assistance to local government agencies on a variety of projects.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with personnel in local governments and professional associations.
• Meet with potential clients to determine needs and negotiate contracts.
• Develop projects and pursue grant funding.
• Participate in professional associations.
• Gather, analyze, and present data in an accessible manner.
• Perform other related duties as assigned. Additional Requirements
The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Public Service Assistant, Public Service Associate, or Senior Public Service Associate.
