The Opportunity:

The Staff Accountant reports to the Director of Accounting and is a vital member of the University’s Accounting Department. This position helps to assure the integrity of the University’s accounting information by recording transactions in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles, standards, and practices for higher education.

Primary responsibilities include recording moderately complex accounting transactions relating to the Office of Financial Aid, amongst other departments. Additional responsibilities include project work and assisting with schedules and testing for both internal and external audits.

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to be a responsible and ethical professional and ambassador for the Controller’s Office to the entire University community.

Examples of Key Responsibilities and Opportunities for the Staff Accountant:
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports/schedules to Accounting, Financial Aid, Finance and Budget and internal and external auditors.
  • Reconciles assigned balance sheet accounts, preparing correcting entries as necessary.
  • Provides interpretation and application of financial policies, governmental legislation and regulations, and/or accounting theory including but not limited to, the areas of financial aid.
  • Analyzes financial information to determine financial performance (present and future).
  • Assists with accounting projects as assigned.

  • Education and experience: A bachelor’s degree is required; a degree in accounting is strongly preferred. Higher education industry knowledge and knowledge of the principles and techniques in higher education is a plus. Minimum of 3 years of financial accounting experience required.
