Facilities Services invites applications for a Journeyman Carpenter . This position is expected to perform installation, maintenance, and repair of rough and finished carpentry, including remodeling spaces. The carpenter will be responsible for maintaining accurate records of time and materials used on all projects. The Journeyman Carpenter will be expected to communicate effectively with coworkers, foremen, and all levels of management. The candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision and take responsibility for completion of tasks. The Journeyman Carpenter must have a vast knowledge of roofing systems, including inspection, maintenance, repair, and installation of all types of roofing materials on campus. The Journeyman Carpenter may assume responsibilities and duties of the Carpenter Foreman during their absence. This position is required to work in dangerous environments, and extreme weather conditions, and may work in environments that require wearing a respirator.

Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Ability to use all power and manual tools related to the trade in a safe manner.
  • Knowledge of installation, repair, and maintenance of all classroom and office furniture. This includes visual display boards, projection screens, window treatments, chairs, and tables.
  • Repair and assemble furniture, sheds, small buildings etc.
  • Fabricate, repair, and install wall access panels. The carpenter is responsible for the repair and installation of windows.
  • Installation and repair of all door openings including frames, doors, locks, exit devices and closers. This includes all electronic door hardware.
  • Perform skilled, rough, and finished carpentry in maintenance and repair projects on campus.
  • Repair and installation of visual boards and projection screens in class room facilities.
  • Construct and install counters, cabinets, and laminated counter tops and partitions as required.
  • Repair tables, shelves, benches, chairs, fixed seating, and upholstered furniture.
  • Installation and repair door closures and operator.
  • Install, repair and adjust mechanical and electrical exit/panic devices, mullions, strikes, hinges, and locksets.
  • Carpet and hardwood floor installation and repair.
  • Installation of glass and glazing repair compounds.
Post-Training Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge and abilities such as:
  • Lift Training.
  • Ability learn and follow The University of Montana safety policies and procedures.
  • Properly document labor and materials utilizing timesheets, labor cards and the work order system.
  • Proficiency in the use of devices (Tablet, Phone, and Computer) for opening work orders, tracking labor, and other functions of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Knowledge and execution of all duties related to Locksmith responsibilities.
Required Skills
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain a valid Montana driver’s license.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills related to the trade.
  • Ability and skill to communicate clearly and effectively with foreman, other crafts people, work order desk, the campus community, and the public.
  • Strong working knowledge of all safety rules and procedures related to the trade.
  • Completion of carpentry apprenticeship program or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, practices, equipment, machines, and techniques used in the carpenter trade.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches.
  • Ability to follow oral or written instruction regarding construction and repair jobs.
  • Ability to work from heights using, scaffolds, ladders, boom, and scissor lifts.
  • Experience erecting scaffolding.
  • Ability to diagnose problems, disassemble, and reassemble building systems.
  • Ability to install and repair Venetian blinds, draperies, roller shades and acoustical ceilings, walls, mini blinds, and black out shades.
  • Experience in all phases of concrete work
  • Experience in roofing installation, repair, and maintenance. Including asphalt shingles, membranes, and built-up roofing materials. Along with roof gutter and downspout knowledge.
  • Experience in building maintenance duties
Physical Requirements

Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. (FROM FJD, “Critical Physical Demands”)
  • Lifting: Ground to 60 inches, up to 50 lbs. Ground to 30 inches, 80 lbs.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 50 lbs. for 10 feet or less.
  • Right and left hand carry up to 75 lbs. for wheelbarrow handling.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 100 lbs. sustained.
  • Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
  • 3 minute overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling).
  • Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
  • Walking various distances, continuously, throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 lbs. of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 lbs.).
  • Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and two (2) years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years as a Journeyman carpenter
  • Five (5) years roofing experience
  • Large commercial construction

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, 12 months/year.
