The University of Vermont Howe Library seeks an innovative and user-oriented librarian to lead the Information and Instruction Services Department. This person provides leadership, planning, coordination, direction, and supervision for the Department’s services and its team of 8 faculty and 1 staff. 

The work of this Department includes reference, research assistance, and instruction services for the University community and all library users. The Department also works collaboratively with other units in the Libraries to maintain reference, government information, and maps collections; it has significant roles in collection development and communications.

Imminent priorities will include redesigning and filling faculty positions; coordinating new information literacy instruction initiatives supporting General Education requirements; and implementing a new Libraries strategic plan.

The position reports to the Dean of Libraries and works collaboratively across UVM’s three libraries: Howe Library, Dana Medical Library, and Silver Special Collections Library. This position provides leadership in the Libraries’ planning and operations as a member of the Dean’s Council and Operations Group. The position also has a leadership role across campus, particularly in establishing and supporting information literacy programs and disciplinary research instruction in courses, programs, and majors.

Librarians at the University of Vermont hold faculty appointments without tenure. As such, librarians are expected to perform in three areas: Educational Mission (Librarianship), Scholarly and Creative Activity, and Service. Rank at time of initial hire and promotions are based upon performance in all three areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and leads the Department through overall administration and continuous improvement of its services, based on strategic priorities, analysis of user needs, and knowledge of professional best practices.
  • Cultivates Department services and working practices that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion values and align with the Libraries’ plan for inclusive excellence.
  • Leads the development and implementation of strategic goals for the Department.
  • Participates in strategic planning and policy-making for the Libraries through membership on the Dean’s Council and Operations Group.
  • Mentors faculty and staff in their professional growth and career progression, and supports their development of teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Works with Collection Management Services in developing and managing reference, government information, and maps collections. 
  • Provides expertise and guidance to the collection development process and serves on the Collections Team.
  • Builds effective partnerships and outreach with appropriate on- and off-campus units, programs, and faculty, such as the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Writing Centers.
  • Facilitates inclusive and participatory decision-making processes.
  • Continually assesses the effectiveness of Department services and interprets and articulates the impact of library instruction to diverse audiences across campus.
  • Develops and pursues a personal agenda for scholarly and/or creative activities.
  • Engages in service activities at library, university, association, and/or community levels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree (M.L.S., M.S., or M.A. in Library or Information Science, or other variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent. Minimum 5 years’ experience in an academic or research library, including reference and instruction.
  • Excellent facilitation, interpersonal relations, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership and management, in librarianship or another capacity, including planning and implementing services and programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of the state of practice in library information and instruction services, fluency in information literacy theory and pedagogy, and a record of successful teaching.
  • A strong record of scholarship, and service, commensurate with appointment to the level of Library Associate Professor or above.

Salary and Application Information: Salary range is $100,000 to $110,000. Generous benefits package includes: TIAA/CREF (or alternative plan), managed health care plan, and 22 days of annual leave.
