Tenure Track Faculty Position in Mining Engineering

The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME; http://www.eme.psu.edu) at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) is seeking creative and dynamic applicants for a tenure track faculty position with a specialization in Mining Engineering. The successful candidate will join a diverse team pursuing education, research, and service in cross disciplinary activities covering broad topics in mining engineering and mineral processing. It is anticipated that the vacancy will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor, although in exceptional circumstances, a candidate at the Associate Professor rank may be considered.

Candidates for Assistant Professor should have:
  • An excellent record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Relevant teaching experience
  • A Ph.D. in mining engineering or a related field by the time of hire.


Candidates for Associate Professor should have:
  • An outstanding publication record
  • A track record of excellence in teaching and mentoring students.
  • A history of scholarly service commensurate with their experience level
  • A Ph.D. in mining engineering or a related field by the time of hire.


Duties will include a combination of teaching, research, and service, based on the candidate's qualifications.

Preferred experience would be industrial experience in modern mining engineering topics, which include but are not limited to automation and control, mine safety and health, sustainability, hard rock mining with emphasis in fragmentation, and mining of rare earth and strategic minerals from primary and secondary mineral resources.

The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, supervise graduate students at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels, pursue a world-class research program in their selected areas of specialization, assist in expanding the Mining Engineering program at Penn State, and demonstrate excellent scholarship and a commitment to enhancing diversity. Suitable candidates may become eligible for an endowed fellowship.

EME is a unique interdisciplinary department that is home to Penn State's undergraduate degree programs in Mining Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Energy Business and Finance, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Energy Engineering and Energy and Sustainability Policy. The department also offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Energy and Mineral Engineering with options focusing on the above areas.
