The Director of Local Government and Community Relations in the New
River Valley serves as a key liaison for the university with the
local governments and communities of the New River Valley (NRV).
The position requires extensive engagement with university leaders
as well as extensive engagement with local NRV elected and
community leaders. The position serves as a central source of
awareness of university local government and community relations
activities and a facilitator of conversations, where needed,
between the university and NRV external engagement. The position
reports to the Associate Vice President of Government and Community
• Bachelor’s degree with government and/or community relations
experience or experience working for an elected official or
• Proven writer and strong communicator.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working and
interacting with senior level managers within an organization and
• Demonstrated ability and desire to work as part of a team.
• Proven experience addressing issues of a sensitive nature and
ability to exercise discretion and good judgement as

• Master’s degree or law degree with government relations or
community relations experience.
• Demonstrated interest in higher education policy.
