The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine is currently seeking a Research Administrator to join Department of Neurology to manage the daily operations and processes of the department’s research administration program. The Research Administrator is responsible for assisting faculty in identifying and applying for funds available to conduct research and overseeing and directing the research administration functions for the Department of Neurology. Provides analytical and financial support in proposal processing, contract and grant administration, and budget development for grants, contracts and clinical trials. Acts as liaison between PI, Sponsored Projects Office and funding agency. This involves activities associated with managing of research efforts by performing some or all of the following: coordinating and developing a final proposal product in accordance with institutional and agency requirements, administering and monitoring contract and grant awards, including subcontract or subaward administration in compliance with regulations, terms and conditions. The Research Administrator supervises research administration support staff and has the authority to formulate, affect, interpret, or implement management policies or operating practice. Reports to the Senior Administrator. We also have a posting for a Research Administration Professional. We will only be hiring one person between these two requisitions.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees and directs the entire research administrative financial operations for the Department of Neurology. This includes managing the pre-and post-award processes, working with Associate Administrator to allocate payroll changes implemented based on research activity, managing the Department’s research account balances.
  • Works with Senior Administrator and the Center for Center for Clinical Trials and Corporate Contracts to negotiate corporate-sponsored research agreements and material transfer agreements as appropriate.
  • Oversee research space utilization, planning, and allocation.
  • Manages compilation and preparation of research administration analyses, trends, and reports.
  • Interface with Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) and Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance (SPAC) and serve as liaison with funding agencies.
  • Partner with UMBF to increase philanthropic giving by working with faculty to create/update biosketches and research proposals for presentation to grateful patients and philanthropic foundations.
  • Assist faculty members in identifying research funding opportunities. This involves monitoring and analyzing Request for Applications (RFAs) for large grants (P, U, etc) from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and other Federal Agencies and targeting the RFAs to appropriate senior faculty led teams.
  • Works with faculty in writing grant applications and contract proposals (budget justifications, letters of support, etc.), collect supporting documentation, prepare budgets; work with subcontractors to obtain timely submission of subcontract applications; ensure applications meet the terms and conditions of application guidelines; respond to just-in-time inquiries and other sponsor requests. Negotiate and/or recommend modifications to contact/subcontract agreements.
  • Develop and maintain database of all grants submitted and awarded including tracking individual faculty grant histories and success rates by agency.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  Qualifications - External

Education: Bachelors in business, public administration or related field of study related to the research. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Six (6) years of progressive experience in pre- and post-award sponsored programs oversight.

Supervisory: One (1) year of work coordination or training of others preferred.

Other: No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement. Financial disclosure required.
