Other Conditions: This position is located in the Office of
the Chancellor and reports directly to the Chancellor. This
position will be reviewed for Tenure and Promotion in the Office of
the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

As a critical member of the Chancellor’s Office, this position has
several key responsibilities that ensure UHWO’s future stability
and sustainability. This position will be responsible for
four pillars of work. First, this position will ensure that
grant and research is in line and advances UHWO’s Strategic Action
Plan (2018). Second, this position will work closely with
faculty, staff and academic divisions to create and sustain a
network of scholarship that seeks to support and enhance the
wellbeing of UHWO and its surrounding communities. Third,
given the array of funding opportunities—foundations, Federal and
State Government, community partnerships, others—this position will
actively monitor and build coalitions to support access to these
fund sources. Finally, as UHWO is a member of the UH System,
this position will actively cooperate with other campuses and
system offices to support continued expansion of research and
scholarship at UHWO.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures that research and grant funding opportunities support the advancement of UHWO strategic and tactical directions.
- Guides research and grant funding opportunities to be in service of UHWO and its surrounding communities and stakeholders.
- Monitors and identifies relevant grant opportunities and disseminates grant proposal information to appropriate faculty members.
- Provides UHWO researchers and grant seekers with technical assistance, professional development, capacity building, coaching, mentoring, and other supports needed to advance research and grant funding.
- Implements and maintains a network of research and scholarship to enhance knowledge of effective research methods, program design and evaluation, grant writing, and other topics that improve opportunities to apply for extramural funding as well as research and publishing.
- Works with grant leadership to monitor, evaluate and report on the progress of research and grant-related projects.
- Promotes the ability to think in multidisciplinary ways for Principal Investigators, Project Directors, and other key grant personnel.
- Advances effective writing strategies among scholars and grant writers.
- Ensures adherence to established policies and procedures for submission to system office prior to proposal submission to external sponsoring agency or community partner (i.e., 10 day rule).
Associate Specialist (S4) Minimum Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in educational research or another appropriate field from an accredited university and 4 years of equivalent experience (post Master’s + 30 credits) at the Assistant Specialist level conducting qualitative, quantitative, or multimethod research.
- Significant experience in grant writing, programmatic design, sequencing, and overall execution, program evaluation, and other grant-related duties.
- Substantial experience successfully navigating different funders’—foundations, Federal and State government, others—processes and requirements for grant submission, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor/coach researchers and grant writers to build capacities and provide technical assistance.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders—faculty, leadership, system offices and community partners.
- Proven record of timely work performance.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Specialist (S5) Minimum Qualifications
- In addition to minimum qualifications listed above for the Associate level, the Specialist requires 4 years of equivalent experience (post-Doctorate) at the Associate Specialist level conducting qualitative, quantitative, or multimethod research.
Desirable Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the University of Hawai?i and processes associated with grants and research.
- Experience working with local and state funders to support access to funding opportunities and processing of grant proposals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in creating, implementing, and sustaining networks of scholars.
- Demonstrated strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Experience planning, organizing, and writing grant proposals using Grants.gov, NSF Fast Lane, DOE G5 System, and knowledge of 2 CFR 200.
