The Psychiatry Department seeks a Social Worker who will provide a variety of services to patients with Huntington’s disease (HD) and their families. Responsibilities include serving as a source of information and referral for resources serving the HD population in the community, and providing case management, counseling services, and a support group for HD patients and their families. Patients and/or families may consult with the social worker in the clinic or may access services by telephone. A monthly support group will meet at a location in the community. The social worker will also represent Johns Hopkins and serve as the main coordinator of all HD education and HD-related events for HD Society of America (HDSA).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The social worker is the primary decision maker for the following in the HD center:

  • Assess needs of new patients.
  • Provide information and instruction about applications for SSDI, SSI, and other government benefits.
  • Complete the forms necessary to support applications for disability or other benefits.
  • Compose the letters of support for applications for disability or other benefits to be approved by the physician.
  • Facilitate monthly HD support group.
  • Educate patients about HD.
  • Provide supportive counseling to patients and/or families.
  • Educate other health care workers about HD, e.g., nursing home and day program staff, occupational therapists, physical therapists, in-home aides, Adult Protective Service workers, etc.
  • Make referrals to services.
  • Follow-up with pre-symptomatic patients testing positive for HD to assess adjustment and to provide support as needed.
  • Disseminate printed information about HD to patients, families and other healthcare workers as needed/requested.
  • Provide in-service education for staffs of nursing homes, day programs, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Inform patients about opportunities for participation in research.
  • Assist with alternative placements including residential, day program, etc.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work or an equivalent organization approved by the Council on Social Work Education.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

  • Licensure as a LMSW requiredand must maintain license throughout duration of employment.
  • Must complete sufficient continuing medical education (CME) credits to satisfy Maryland license/license renewal requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:Two years social work experience.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Master’s degree in Social Work.
  • Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Must be proficient in Word, Adobe, and in utilizing mass communication email methods.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Work requires proofreading and/or reviewing documents.

Working Conditions:

Hybrid position, onsite for patient visits and offsite for other tasks

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
