The Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University seeks candidates for aNurse Practitioner for the Pediatric Emergency Department. The successful applicant will have experience with managing pediatric trauma as well as pediatric emergency department workflow.

This is a clinical operations position that will work in the Pediatrics ED. The shifts may vary because this is a 24/7 service, but it will remain a full-time position essential staff. Staff may work weekends, days, evenings, and night shifts.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for performing many patient-oriented tasks such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing appropriate treatments, and performing appropriate procedures.
  • Educates patients/participants and/or their families in order to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health, and intervene in acute or chronic illness. The PA ensures patient and physician calls are returned in a timely manner, and all patient interactions are documented appropriately in the Electronic Patient Record (EPR).
  • Function as a liaison between Pediatric Emergency Medicine, primary care providers, nurse case managers, inpatient personnel and health care professionals in other specialties. Triage pages, responding as needed, or forwarding a detailed message to the appropriate physician. Answer questions from patients regarding physician instructions, medications, prescription refills, and/or other aspects of clinical care. Retrieve diagnostic results, coordinate physician sign-off of results, and call patients with results according to clinic protocol.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development and remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education programs. Responsible and accountable for time management, professional relationships, and interpersonal interactions. Regularly attends all departmental meetings, assisting with an educational mission when necessary.
  • Assesses and/or manages follow-up plans, specific to the age of the patient served. Regularly gives effective, complete, and accurate instructions regarding good health maintenance to include disease prevention and home health care according to department guidelines and under the supervision of a physician. Records and documents health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/or expedite required services.
  • This position acts as a resource to health care staff and implements programs to improve the health status of patients/families, taking into consideration the developmental needs of the parents and families. Consistently requests consultations with appropriate departments when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Additional experience may substitute for Master's Degree.
  • Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • CPR certification, current licensure and certification required during employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
