The Henry Luce III Center for the Arts & Religion at Wesley Theological Seminary welcomes applications for the part-time role of Community Arts Coordinator.

The Luce Center focuses on fostering a rich, challenging dialogue between art and religion (of any type) through exhibitions, artist residencies, research, and community outreach.  Wesley’s Dadian Gallery is outfitted to museum quality and has hosted exhibitions by a range of established and emerging artists.  The director is Dr. Aaron Rosen and Dr. Devon Abts is the assistant director, with further staff, interns, and adjunct faculty with curatorial and research duties.

The new Community Arts Coordinator will focus on further developing and extending the Luce Center’s commitment to engaging diverse audiences with its programming and activities, both in-person and online.  Applicants should have a passion for, and demonstrable record of, community engagement, and a collaborative and creative spirit.  An interest in and ability to contribute to programming in one or more of our focus areas of racial and social justice, interfaith dialogue, and climate action is advantageous.  Previous experience working with religious communities is helpful, but not required, as are links with local communities in the DC-MD-VA area.

This role will include planning, advertising, and implementing community events online and in-person, and experience delivering in these areas is important.  Experience with digital communications is an asset, such as web updates (via SquareSpace), Instagram posts, and managing email lists.  While this is an administrative position, the Luce team works collaboratively, and values ideas and input from all staff.  We are excited to have a person join our team with their own ideas for growing our program.

The initial term of appointment is 1 year, renewable subject to a performance evaluation.  You will work 1 day a week (or equivalent hours), with flexible timing by arrangement with your supervisor.  Remote work is possible, though the possibility to do periodic tasks in person  (subject to health protocols) is an asset.  The position is paid year-round, but will require only minimal tasks outside the academic year.  The stipend is $10,000 annually and is not benefit-eligible.

Applicants should have a BA or equivalent experience.  Applicants with a terminal degree (e.g. PhD, MFA, etc.) may apply to teach Master’s courses in religion and the arts, subject to standard faculty and course approval processes, in addition to their administrative duties for an extra stipend ($2,400 per 2-credit course).  The Luce Center has a large and well-appointed art studio and welcomes new classes in studio art as well as courses which focus on the arts in relation to communities, equality and justice.  There may also be opportunities to guest curate exhibitions.

To apply, please email a 1-page cover letter and full CV to the Director of Human Resources at Wesley:  hr@wesleyseminary.edu.  Questions about the position can be sent to Dr. Aaron Rosen, the Luce Center director, at:  arosen@wesleyseminary.edu

Applications are due by email by September 1.  Interviews will be held via Zoom in mid September with an anticipated start date of October 1 (flexible).

Wesley Theological Seminary is an equal opportunity employer.
