Job Description
Independently performs a wide variety of state-of-the-science geomorphic laboratory and field research procedures, tests, surveys, and/or excavations at a professional (M.S.) level. Interpret and write-up results for peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Present scientific results, analyses and interpretations to scientific audiences.
Essential Position Responsibilities
- Conducts topographic surveying by total station, GNSS, and bathymetric techniques in remote locations
- Operates and repair oar and motor-powered rafts in the Colorado River in Grand Canyon
- Independently conducts fluvial geomorphic research activities, including data collection, evaluation and analysis, using techniques developed or described in publications of the research group (see publications by Kaplinski, M. et al., Grams, P. et al. or Chapman, K et al., Buscombe, D et al.)
- Adjusts, amends, or develops research techniques as necessary for the type of research being conducted.
- Performs skilled procedures, tests, or analyses at a level appropriate for peer-reviewed publications.
- Analyzes data and writes research reports; with co-authors draft materials for peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and grant proposals.
- Monitors research operating procedures and performs quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.
- May direct the work of, mentor, and/or evaluate paid students or other research support resource
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in a relevant discipline
- 4-6 years of research support experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in relevant discipline
- Effective communication skills – both written and verbal
- Qualified to operate and repair both oar and motor-powered boats in Grand Canyon.
- Certified to operate US Geological Survey watercraft by successful completion of US department of Interior, Motorboat operator Certification Course (MOCC).
