The Division of Nephrology seeks to hire a Senior Programmer Analyst to help oversee and assist with data management, organization, and analysis in collaboration with faculty within the Division of Nephrology and the Departments of Medicine, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics. The ideal candidate will be required to write programs and scripts to extract, merge, and transform electronic health record data and large datasets from other sources (such as genomics).

In addition to outstanding programming skills, the candidate must have strong organizational skills and the ability to learn and apply statistical algorithms to a range of large datasets. A strong computing and mathematical background and the ability to learn new techniques rapidly incorporating innovative methods is required. Data structuring skills are extremely important. A strong interest in collaborative epidemiologic and biostatistics research is a high priority.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Constructing, combining and cleaning datasets to facilitate research into kidney-related research questions or quality improvement assessment of clinical practices. The Programmer Analyst will use SQL to create analytic datasets from electronic health records and other data sources.
  • Database management including data checking and cleaning, creation and maintenance of data dictionaries for datasets, merging data, creating and recoding variables to prepare data for analyses.
  • Develop strategies and procedures to maintain a large registry of electronic health record data.
  • Integration of large cohort and biobank datasets, including –omic data (genomics, epigenetics, proteomics, metabolomics) with electronic health record data.
  • Produce tables and graphs in publication-quality form, & present results to senior investigators.
  • Serves as a quality control checkpoint person for data collected and analyses.
  • Defining and maintaining an efficient computing and data environment which facilitates collaboration and secure access by a multidisciplinary team of faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • Collaboration with statisticians regarding study designs and analyses.
  • Participation in regular seminars and meetings of investigators.
  • Performs multiple tasks and other functions outside the scope of this position.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline (i.e. Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics).
  • Three years of related experience is required. Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards the required experience
  • Additional education may substitute for some required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Fluency using SQL.
  • Experience in at least one other statistical or programming language.
  • Understanding issues related to processing and aggregating electronic health record data.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • MS Access, Excel, Word.
  • Experience in database management & data analysis.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
