Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Police Cadet is preparing to become a police officer within the Lone Star College Police Department. While waiting for police academy placement, the Cadet will serve as a Public Safety Officer performing non-law enforcement security duties. Once placed in a police academy, the Cadet will attend the academy full time and work towards graduation. Upon graduation, the individual will be sworn in as a peace officer and promoted to the rank of Lone Star College Police Officer.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. While serving as a Public Safety Officer awaiting academy placement:
    1. Patrols campus grounds and buildings, checking doors, windows, and gates to ensure that they are properly secured
    2. Provides assistance to all students, faculty, and visitors, and responds to calls for first aid and medical assists
    3. Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures and adheres to quality guidelines
    4. Works under a moderate degree of supervision
    5. Reports criminal activity and need for law enforcement services to LSC Police Dispatch
    6. Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
  2. Upon placement in police academy:
    1. Successfully completes all police academy requirements
    2. Interacts regularly with department liaison
    3. Passes TCOLE peace officer licensing exam
    4. Qualifies with police department sidearm, rifles and less lethal tools


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Microsoft Office and the use of software programs designed for police department use
  • Proficiency in the use of firearms
  • Ability to communicate well
  • Ability to work under pressure, remain calm in emergency situations, and skilled in conflict resolution
  • Must be able to retain and demonstrate knowledge of numerous criminal justice procedures, statutes and philosophies
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Subject to extended periods of intense concentration
  • Ability to drive a patrol vehicle
  • Subject to physical harm such as weapons and physical attacks
  • Vision (Near, Distance, Color, Peripheral, Depth Perception); possesses the ability to detect and observe movement and activity in extremely low light situations
  • Ability to stand for lengthy periods of time and perform strenuous physical exertion including bending, stooping, running, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.
  • Ability to carry moderately heavy items on an as needed basis such as jump start booster pack and barricades to limit vehicular traffic. Work is performed primarily in an external environment with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures
  • Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Finger dexterity necessary to operate equipment used in the position
  • Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • May be required to physically restrain persons
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound
  • Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and report
  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment. Machines, tools, equipment and work aids which may be representative but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this job. Motor vehicle and standard issue police equipment as specified by departmental policies.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Selected candidate will be required to sign a four-year contractual commitment to remain employed wi th the LSC Police Department upon graduation from police academy
  • Applicants must qualify with ONE of the following:
    • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, OR
    • 30 earned hours from an accredited college or university and four years’ experience working as a non-sworn employee with the LSC Police Department, OR
    • 60 earned hours or an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and 2 years’ experience working as a non-sworn employee with the LSC Police Department, OR
    • Four years of United States military service with an honorable discharge
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with a driving record that meets the criteria established by the System
  • Once hired, must be able to graduate from the police academy selected by the LSC Police Department and obtain a TCOLE Peace Officer’s License
  • Selected candidate must be a U.S. citizen in order to be licensed by TCOLE
  • Selected candidate must be 21 years old to enter the academy

Hiring salary is $ 27,910
