The University of Houston College of Medicine (UHCOM) is recruiting for an Associate Dean for Medical Education, to join the leadership team of Founding Dean Stephen J. Spann, M.D., M.B.A. The inaugural class of 30 students began July 2020 and the second class of 30 began July 2021. The third class will increase in size to 60 students. Construction on a dedicated medical education building began in May 2020 and should be complete by July 2022.

The curriculum of this community-based medical school has a strong focus on primary care; behavioral, community and population health; high value healthcare; social determinants of health; and partnering with communities with major health disparities to improve health and healthcare. The curriculum that has been developed utilizes the best practices in medical education. At this time, all faculty appointments in the College of Medicine are non-tenure track. The College of Medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.

The Associate Dean for Medical Education functions under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine and works in cooperation with appropriate University offices and within existing University policies, procedures, and practices.

Specific duties include the following:

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Directs and oversees the Office of Medical Education
  • Serves as the College of Medicine lead in the LCME accreditation process
  • Maintains LCME accreditation standards – meeting or exceeding requirements in all education areas
  • Maintains quality of curriculum and leads improvement efforts
  • Supports and provides career development for the faculty
  • Ensures program evaluation is aligned with accreditation standards and data needs
  • Shepherds adherence to accreditation expectations as set forth by LCME
  • Anticipates and responds to changes in accreditation requirements and advances in medical education
  • Oversees the continuous quality improvement of the 4-year MD program in the College of Medicine
  • Maintains and amends academic advancement policies
  • Collaborates with Office of Student Affairs, Admissions & Outreach (SAAO) to include creation of a positive and effective learning environment
  • Aligns initiatives to ensure student wellness and educational progress with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Admissions and Outreach
  • Provides guidance regarding the educational funds flow (educational FTE distribution) metrics and correct errors
  • Develops and maintains external educational partnerships
  • Advises individual students
  • Participates in student recruitment efforts
  • Oversees classroom services, testing, simulation center, and other educational entities
  • Adheres to internal controls established for office and department
  • If clinician, 20% of effort will be dedicated to clinical practice
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned


Salary and rank commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Qualifications :

  • Medical Doctor and medical licensure in the State of Texas or PhD or equivalent degree
  • Minimum of five years of experience with medical student education at an LCME- accredited US medical school.


Preferred Experience

  • Five or more years of experience with medical student education, including curricular innovation and accreditation oversight
  • Experience as a course/clerkship director or equivalent.
  • Experience in faculty development.
  • Experience as a manager with direct reports.
  • Experience managing multiple budgets
  • Prior experience with LCME accreditation
  • Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution and excellent interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work with leadership across an institution and represent the interest of all groups in an equitable manner
  • Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment


Preferred Skills/Competency :

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to interact with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish goals.
