Assistant Director, Transfer Academic Advising

Emerson College is seeking an Assistant Director who will serve as the primary contact person in the Academic Advising Center to independently plan and implement academic advising services and programming for transfer students. The Assistant Director will act as the direct advisor to transfer students during their first semester to assist them with their transition to the College, understanding academic requirements, navigating academic policies and procedures, planning long-term goals, and resolving issues that affect academic performance. They will coordinate with Undergraduate Admission, the Office of the Registrar, and Department Chairs to help facilitate the advising and registration of all incoming transfer students. The Assistant Director will provide ongoing support to ensure continuing transfers efficiently accomplish their academic goals. They will assist the Academic Advising team with planning and implementing school­-wide academic advising services, advising any undergraduate student seeking an academic advising meeting, participating in walk-­in advising appointments, and registering incoming first­-year students.

Key Responsibilities:

Transfer Advising:
  • Plan and implement transfer student advising services. Act as the sole direct advisor to all new transfer students.
  • Assist new transfer students in their academic transition to the College:
  • Review transfer credit evaluations; provide guidance on curriculum planning and course sequencing; prepare for course selection and registration; monitor academic status and conduct outreach when appropriate; discuss minor options and study abroad & domestic programs; any other topic related to long-­term academic planning.
  • Conduct individual and group advisement for every new transfer student. Provide accurate guidance to ensure new and continuing transfers efficiently and successfully accomplish academic goals.
  • Promote students' awareness of institutional policies and procedures.
  • Refer students to, and collaborate with, appropriate offices (Office of the Registrar, Writing and Academic Resource Center, Education Abroad & Domestic Programs, and Career Development Center) and/or faculty to address student questions and concerns.
  • Participate in crisis intervention by meeting with students and families and working collaboratively with the Office of Student Success, Director of Care & Support, Student Accessibility Services, Housing & Residential Education, and Counseling & Psychological Services so that any obstacles that may compromise the transfer experience can be addressed and remedied.


New Transfer Student Registration:
  • Coordinate the preparation, execution, and completion of registering all new transfer students. Collaborate with Undergraduate Admission and Enrollment Technology to ensure transfer students are appropriately informed about the new student registration process.
  • Assist Academic Affairs in anticipating transfer student needs to properly plan course offerings. Confer with Department Chairs and Undergraduate Coordinators regarding appropriate placement in major classes.
  • Work closely with the Office of the Registrar to ensure accurate evaluation of transfer credits. Monitor updated credit evaluations and make schedule changes as needed.
  • Create and review all schedules to ensure accuracy.
  • Update and revise written materials to ensure a successful registration process is achieved each semester.


Transfer Student Programming: Develop and implement transfer­-specific programming, events, mailings, and workshops. Oversee advising ­related programming for transfers during Orientation and Admissions events. Generate and revise written materials (brochures, mailings, etc.) to support programming.

Your Other Responsibilities:
  • Assist with non­-transfer specific advising services as part of the Academic Advising team, such as the planning and implementing school­-wide academic advising services, advising any undergraduate student seeking an academic advising meeting, participating in walk-­in advising appointments, and registering incoming first­-year students.
  • Represent the Academic Advising Center at campus-wide programs by actively participating in Admission events, Orientation, and facilitating a section of Emerson's First-Year Experience Program, Emersion: Foundations of Success
  • Travel for conferences/professional development opportunities as available
  • All other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling psychology, or related field
  • Three or more years of experience in advising or counseling college students
  • Excellent organizational skills and precise attention to detail
  • Ability to multi­task, prioritize responsibilities, and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to learn, retain, and disseminate accurate information
  • Ability to process and problem­-solve complex situations
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as the ability to present to small and large groups
  • Positive attitude and commitment to service excellence
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required


You'll be Preferred with:
  • Direct experience working with transfer students
  • Working knowledge of Banner, DegreeWorks, BDMS, and Box

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

Hiring Range: $61,350.00 - $64,300.00
