Job Summary

The Director will have primary responsibility for facilitating the Patriot Drumline and Spirit Band. The successful candidate for this position will have a joint appointment between the Division of Student Success and the School of Performing Arts at a non-tenure faculty rank based on experience. As a valuable member of both the Division of Student Success and the School of Performing Arts, the candidate will collaborate with members of the campus community to the support the University’s vision to engage our students and community.
 

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

  • Direct and provide administrative support to the non-academic UT Tyler Patriot Drumline and provide oversight for the Patriot Spirit Band and lay a foundation for future non-academic band programs at the University.
  • Develop and implement Drumline/Patriot Band program (market, recruit, audition/select, instruct).
  • Acquire and maintain equipment.
  • Develop student standards for conduct and performance.
  • Schedule band performances.
  • Teach and manage multiple courses in a classroom or individualized setting.
  • Teach course(s) per semester/academic year as required by the department.
  • Support and manage multiple logistical aspects of the non-academic band program, including the purchase, maintenance, and inventory of band equipment, and assisting in the coordination of major events both on and off campus. 
  • Hold a faculty appointment in the School of Performing Arts as assigned by the Director and at a level appropriate for the faculty appointment in the School of Performing Arts.
  • Faculty responsibilities may include teaching applied percussion, percussion ensemble, and other courses as appropriate; student recruitment; end-of-semester juries; and other typical faculty responsibilities.
  • Responsibilities include recruitment, auditions, and selection of ensemble members.
  • Acquire all necessary certifications and training related to student travel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
     

Minimum Required Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in Music.
  • Successful experience teaching at a college or high school level.
  • Experience developing and growing non-academic and academic music programs.

  • Ability to revise and develop curriculum and select textbooks and materials in cooperation with colleagues.
  • Skilled use of course and student management system.
  • Ability to work with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to teach and evaluate student performance.
  • Ability to provide accessible course and performance materials. 
  • Demonstrated ability for success in community engagement efforts.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
