The Department of Genetic Medicine seeks aResearch Technologist who will be responsible for cell culture, removing/adding specimens to biorepository, shipping biological specimens, and customer service in a busy core facility.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Cell Culture (40%)

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to maintain human and animal cells in culture.
  • Perform duties, including: preparation of media and tissue culture reagents; sterilization and preparation of tissue culture equipment; handling cultures; and propagation, maintenance and special manipulations of cell lines (e.g. EBV transformations), blood processing, clinical collection processing and cryopreservation.
  • Manage cell culture for special projects.
  • Manage inventory of shipping stocks.
  • Prepare live flasks for shipment.
  • Prepare Fibroblast cells from skin biopsy.
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, documents orders upon receipt.
  • Maintains accurate data records. Updating of database and documentation in Laboratory notebooks. Maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.
  • Use various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Prepare Invoices for work completed. Monitor Dry Ice and prepare Dry Ice invoices
  • Will interact with customers of various levels, including investigators from other institutions.
  • Will be held accountable to a standard in daily laboratory workflow.

Clinical Trial Assistance (40%)

  • Coordinate incoming clinical studies to include investigator quotes, billing, generation of short-hand reference materials, staff training to protocol standards and serving as a contact for clinical support services

Quality Assurance (20%)

  • Maintenance log tracking, sterility testing, equipment maintenance agreement upkeep, bioprocessing billing standardization monitor, quarterly success reporting, quarterly function checks
  • Mylearning local training assignment representative
  • Monitor staff training and compliance for the GRCF Cell Center & Repository
  • Monitoring CAP regulation changes and compliance for the center.
  • Cross-trained in the GRCF DNA services daily functions
  • Support the GRCF Cell Center in additional tasks as needed.

  • Liquid Nitrogen storage freezers

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
  • Lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc.
  • Ability to move about workspace.

Physical Requirements:

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
