GENERAL SUMMARY


The Director of the
Institute for Learning, Innovation, and Faculty Excellence (iLIFE) supports excellence in teaching and learning and educational technology innovation through leadership of a centralized faculty training and development framework that facilitates excellent student outcomes and an engaged faculty focused on excellence in teaching and learning. The Director guides the mission, vision, and activities of the Institute, which includes technology, teaching effectiveness, educational research, mentoring, and innovation development resources, as well as teaching certificates and educational programming to support faculty excellence. The Director provides thought leadership and engages actively with faculty, academic leadership, and other stakeholders across the university to identify new opportunities for faculty support and development, as well as new technologies and tools to enhance the faculty teaching and student learning experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leads development of and manages the vision, mission, strategy, and activities of the Institute for Learning, Innovation, and Faculty Excellence and Innovation, including expectations, processes, procedures, and evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Facilitates and coordinates instructor training and educational programming, including training around teaching, learning, and assessment best practices, in face to face and online modalities, synchronously and asynchronously.
  • Facilitates and coordinates faculty training in educational technologies, including both online (e.g., Blackboard) and campus-based technologies (e.g., simulation and other campus equipment), and provides guidance for faculty on appropriate adoption of these tools to teaching practice guided by the goal of optimizing student learning outcomes.
  • Responsible for continual development and oversight of USAHS’s faculty development processes, including faculty onboarding, training and orientation, and mentoring through both peer and academic support programs.
  • Develops and delivers new faculty orientation and a scaffolded year-long development sequence for all core faculty and select contributing faculty.
  • Works with academic leadership to provide individualized faculty development plans for teaching effectiveness, based on newly hired, intermediate and more senior faculty.
  • Collaborates with educational and administrative support units to achieve faculty development, as well as teaching effectiveness goals based on student feedback and outcomes.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in educational innovation, teaching effectiveness, and faculty development. Engages with stakeholders to share current trends and stimulate innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Leads educational innovation efforts that directly impact faculty teaching practice by researching, partnering with faculty and other stakeholders, identifying teaching innovation projects to recommend for funding, and designing training for new educational technologies and approaches that have been adopted.
  • Partners with academic leaders to develop university-wide teaching and learning quality indicators and supports the achievement of quality through Institute educational programming and activities.
  • Participates in University governance, curriculum planning, and functions to support development and growth of the institution as appropriate
  • Leads the iLIFE Committee; Teaching, Innovation, and Peer Support (TIPS) Committee; Teaching Innovation Steering Committee, and serves on other programmatic and University committees as assigned
  • Serves as University liaison in community and/or professional activities

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position may be required to travel up to 30%.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Doctorate in Education, or closely related degree.
  • At least 5 years of higher education instructional experience, preferably at the graduate level (or closely related experience in training, mentoring or coaching may be considered).
  • In-depth knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional approaches, assessment techniques.
  • Ability to transfer theory into practice, to reach a broad audience.
  • Knowledge of educational practices within health sciences (clinical approaches, etc.).
  • Knowledge of various accreditation requirements as it applies to faculty development expectations.
  • At least 5 years of past faculty development experience (commiserate management and/or trainer experience would be considered).
  • Demonstrated experience with delivering training/instruction in a variety of formats (face-to-face, online, synchronous-remotely).

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary.
