Job Summary
Leads and coordinates the daily work of the Grounds Department. Trains, supervises, and evaluates all Grounds staff, including full-time, part-time, and student employees. Supervises outside contractors hired to do grounds maintenance work. The primary job duty of the Grounds Supervisor is the supervision of University grounds employees and directing the planting, pruning, and cultivating of trees, shrubs, and flowers, and the seeding, fertilizing, mowing, weeding and trimming of all University grounds. The Grounds Supervisor oversees the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, other weather-generated debris, and trash from all University grounds, instructs groundskeepers in the proper use of tools and equipment, and assists the Facilities Management Services Manager in administration and management of grounds functions.

Essential Functions
1. Leads the Grounds Department, ensuring that the campus landscape appearance meets the quality expectations befitting the University.
2. Establishes and implements the repair, and maintenance routines for all campus roads, parking lots, sidewalks, pavers, retaining walls, turf and mulch areas, exterior ramps and stairs, trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plantings.
3. Maintains exterior fences and signs.
4. Purchases and maintains adequate stock of required Grounds supplies, tools, and equipment.
5. Assures that the vehicles, tools and equipment are kept in good repair and compliance.
6. Coordinates the orderly and timely removal of snow and de-icing of all campus roads, parking lots, sidewalks, ramps, and stairs.
7. Oversees the maintenance and repairs of the sports fields.
8. Maintains and updates all information pertaining to the University Arboretum.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. Performs other duties as assigned.
2. Supports the University’s mission, vision and values.
3. Learns and enforces all safety rules and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Previous supervisory experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance (or similar field) with demonstratable positive outcomes.
2. Ability to motivate Grounds employees and establish and maintain a good working relationship with students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
3. Good oral and written communication skills.
4. A class C driver’s license.
5. Ability to obtain Illinois Pesticide Operator’s and Applicator’s licenses and wear a respirator.
6. Ability to obtain a Certified Arborist certificate through the International Society of Arboriculture.
7. Basic knowledge of Taxonomy to maintain the University Arboretum.
8. An associate’s degree, or equivalent, is required. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions (temperatures varying from below 32 degrees to over 90 degrees) for periods of over one hour, subject to hazards such as proximity to moving parts, electrical current, etc., and involves heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 35 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and lift 50 pounds. Must be able to be fitted with and wear a respirator. Must be willing to work overtime, including nights and weekends, as required
