A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic and operational success. The Advisor Advocate shall have primary responsibility for supporting the Center for Academic Resources and Support in academic advising to international students. This customer-centric role will ensure that international students receive the individual attention they need to succeed before entering a program. Serves as project lead in special projects related to scholarships, internships, tutoring, and student-departmental initiatives.

Essential Functions:

This role will develop and lead the development and monitoring of academic plans to assist international students with timely graduation and supports the University's retention and graduation initiatives.

  • Provides support in this capacity to the Associate Director and the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.
  • Provides information to students via academic advising towards degree progression including review of course offering and registration.
  • Implements academic intervention options and strategies with all student classifications.
  • Monitors at-risk students and actively provides referrals for support services, providing timely outreach and referrals with students.
  • Serves undergraduate students in their pursuit of timely progress toward graduation.
  • Partners with faculty advisors in creating safe spaces where students can seek assistance.
  • Communicates with faculty as needed to assist students in resolving conflicts.
  • Provides quality customer service to all constituents of CARS.
  • Facilitates relationships between students and other offices on campus.
  • Empowers students to know their rights and make informed choices.
  • Encourages students to set and achieve their goals both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Assists students in declaring majors within their freshman year.
  • Maintains direct ongoing contact with first-year students.
  • Teaches FMU 101 – University 101 – as assigned by the Associate Provost.
  • Contributes to committee and teamwork for the good of the department.
  • Maintains regular office hours per an approved schedule. Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

  • Manage, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks/projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.


Qualifications:

  • The position requires a bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of experience (preferable) working in an academic advisory and supervisory role, preferably in a postsecondary institution, and understand current trends in academic advising and higher education.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Familiar with Jenzabar technology suite for higher education.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
