Department Summary
The Communications Office at the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) plays a key role in advancing the strategic objectives of the school and the university, including recruiting talented students and faculty, inspiring alumni and donor support, and enhancing the national reputation of the school.

The Communications Office plans and implements the school's overall marketing and communication strategy; actively manages and directs the school's website and affiliated web and social media presences; plans, creates, produces, and distributes a range of materials, including annual reports, presentations, e-newsletters, brochures, blogs, advertisements, and videos; and develops and administers the school's brand identity standards in accordance with the university's overall marketing strategy and identity standards.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Communication, the Digital Marketing Specialist will provide hands-on digital marketing and communication strategy and front-end support to advance SOJC's communication objectives. The SOJC Communication Office aligns closely with the University Communications Office, and the Digital Marketing Specialist will leverage centralized resources to move in step with UO's overall communication strategy. This position will be responsible for managing the SOJC digital advertising and email marketing programs, website digital strategy and SEO/SEM, information architecture development and testing, analytics reporting, and project management of marketing campaigns and projects. The Digital Marketing Specialist will work closely with the Communication Director, Managing Editor, Events and Communication Manager, and Senior Graphic Designer to support ongoing communication work. This will include responsibility to advise, guide, and assist SOJC Communication staff in developing and producing digital marketing materials and in public information policy and procedure. This is not a social media position.

In addition, this position will actively monitor analytics and engagement trends across channels to make content recommendations that best engage our primary audiences. This position will have independent judgment and experience leading projects and working in a fast-paced team environment.

Minimum Requirements
  • Three years of experience as a public relations representative for an organization that involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, and interaction with the news media. At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program.

    A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.

    (NOTE: "Experience as a public relations representative" can include any marketing or communication work. Experience contributing to a campaign, major project, or communication channel/program, such as a website or analytics initiative, can count for "participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program.")

    Professional Competencies
  • Experience managing digital advertising campaigns on platforms such as Google Ads and similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, test, and measure email marketing campaigns on platforms such as MyEmma, Bronto, iModules, or MailChimp.
  • Demonstrated ability to track and review analytics across platforms (email, web, social) to develop actionable marketing recommendations.
  • Experiencing managing SEM and SEO.
  • Experience in developing and analyzing market research (surveys, focus groups, etc.).
  • Ability to do front-end and website maintenance in a modern web environment with intermediate to extensive experience working in content management systems (Drupal, Word Press).
  • Ability to manage time and projects in an efficient manner and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated high-functioning organizational skills while working as part of a larger team.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and equity.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of accessibility-related guidelines including Title II and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA.
  • Comfort sizing images for various web properties and captioning digital multimedia content.
  • Ability to work with the Windows and Mac OS operating systems.
  • Project management experience preferably using a program such as Asana, Trello, Basecamp, Wrike or similar.
