Mechanic - Grounds Equipment
Position Category: Staff - Full-Time
Summary:
Utah Valley University is looking to hire a grounds mechanic to maintain, repair, or fabricate ground equipment. This all so includes all motorized and non-motorized (licensed and unlicensed) equipment used for the Grounds department. The Grounds Mechanic troubleshoots and diagnoses any electrical and mechanical failures and works with the Equipment Manager for proper repairs.
* Maintains a preventative maintenance program cycling through all Grounds machinery
* Keeps accurate and detailed maintenance records and assists the Equipment Manager in the control of inventory of all parts and supplies
* Supervises the grounds shop and personnel within the shop and evaluates and monitors the condition of all equipment by operating and testing for safety and proper functioning use

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and three years of job related experience.
Must have a current drivers license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Knowledge in repairing small and large engines and equipment
* Knowledge of hydraulic repair
* Knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscaping
* Computer skills and knowledge
* Possess interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills
* Ability to learn new inventory software
* Ability to supervise and train staff
* Ability to communicate orally and in writing
* Ability to maintain accurate records and files
* Ability to perform auto body repair and painting
* Ability to operate heavy and light equipment
* Ability to work an on-call 24/7 schedule for snow removal and other campus emergencies
* Ability to read and understand the electrical schematics of equipment
* Ability to safely operate welders (wire, arc and gas)
* Ability to monitor a budget and report verbally and in writing the mechanical needs of the department
* This includes the ability to analyze and compare the cost effectiveness of repair vs. replacement of physical plant equipment and be able to verbally and in writing make recommendations to appropriate physical plant personnel

Physical Requirements:
* Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. -Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
* Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
* Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
