The Department of Urology is seeking aSenior Research Specialist for the laboratory of Dr. Arthur Burnett. The position will play a key role in Dr. Burnett’s translational research program, linking clinical research studies with the laboratory’s efforts and research. The position will play an active role in both clinical studies as well as conduct experiments at the bench. The position will play a key role in the administrative aspects of maintaining the laboratory. Assist with writing research proposals for funding applications. Interact with the principle investigator, other collaborators (clinical and basic science), clinical research staff, administrative personnel, and other research personnel. Perform complex and routine experiments, development and implementation of assays, protocols and operating procedures. Perform experimental procedures on animals (rodent), perform biochemical assays, process tissue for histopathology, and perform image analysis. Assist in the analysis of collected data, generation of graphs, and statistical analysis. Use independent judgement for making decisions on the execution of experimental protocols and on operation of laboratories and troubleshoot technical problems.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the specification, design, implementation, and modification of projects.
  • Responsible for overall operational elements of laboratory functioning as representative of PI.
  • Prepare test plan data to ensure quality and integrity. Oversee and participate in study record management and data collection.
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, abstracts, invention disclosures, presentations, and funding applications.
  • Perform complex and routine testing, following both established and new protocols.
  • Assist with clinical trials by playing an active role in the screening of potentially eligible patients and the writing and compiling of necessary reports as required by the sponsor and/or institutional regulatory groups.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and conduct preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment related to this specialty.
  • Coordinate the ordering of supplies and acquisition of equipment and procurement of service contracts.
  • Support and train staff, students, residents and others.
  • Organize, attend, and lead assigned meetings (including national), as required.
  • Contribute intellectually to design of diverse experiments.
  • Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for ACUC, IRB, CLIA, and/or regulatory reviews. Coordinates and maintains all regulatory binders, logs and audits. Responsible for biosafety compliance for multiple research laboratories.
  • Coordinate efficient use of laboratory space and sharing of equipment among the personnel by arranging bench space, surgical space, computer workstations, and desk space in accordance with changes in staffing and laboratory needs.
  • Coordinate shipping of animals and ensure mouse colonies are properly managed by staff.
  • Ensure that packaging of biological specimens for overnight shipping is in accordance with federal rules and regulations.
  • Serve as a resource for investigators and collaborators.
  • Implement new protocols, oversee assay validations in conjunction with PI.
  • Supervise data collection and verification based on specialized skill and knowledge.
  • Screen and track patient study enrollment.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.
  • 4 years experience in a comparable laboratory performing related techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Experience coordinating, conducting and managing studies.
  • Experience with IRB regulatory matters.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment in a specialty lab.
  • Computer competency.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and training skills.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • PC related software, printers, copiers and scanners.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
  • Able to see within normal parameters and to hear within normal range.
  • Able to lift minimum weight, 10 lbs.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
