Job Description:

OFFICIAL TITLE: Staff Assistant, Residence Director
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Resident Assistants and Student Staff

General Statement of Duties: The Staff Assistant, Residence Director is responsible for the operation of designated residence halls, to include the duties listed below. This is a full-time, 12-month position that requires the incumbent to reside on campus.

(E) Responsible for the planning, organization and direction of student activities within assigned residence hall area.
(E) Assists in the selection of professional staff and makes recommendations for appointment and other personnel actions.
(E) Acts as a judicial hearing officer for the residence halls.
(E) Provides for the security of the residence halls and works to teach students self-responsibility within the residence halls.
(E) Serves as a resource/referral agent advising students as to the availability of support services within the residence halls and throughout campus; is available for individual/group contact and advisement.
(E) Responsible for the opening and closing of all residence hall facilities, room assignments, damage assessments and residence hall orientation.
(E) Responsible for evaluating Resident Assistant performance in the assigned area and providing recommendations for the annual rehire process.
(E) Provides written reports and summaries as requested by the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Directors of Residence Life and Housing.
(E) Responsible for overseeing the damage billing process in their assigned area each semester.
(E) Supervises the undergraduate Resident Assistant staff in their assigned area.
(E) Participates in the Residence Life professional staff on call rotation.
Serves on various departmental and university committees.
(E) Participates in the on-site hosting of the summer conference programs.
(E) Assists with departmental processes such as Staff Selection, RA Development and Evaluation, Room Selection, Staff Training, etc.
(E) Facilitates conflict resolution between residents.
(E) Presents a visible and accessible image in the residence hall.
(E) Performs winter break duty.
(E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.
Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree;
  • Demonstrated supervisory and administrative experience;
  • Demonstrated experience with education, cultural, and recreational programming;
  • Demonstrated experience with staff training theory and practice;
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflicts and crises;
  • Demonstrated awareness/sensitivity toward issues pertaining to affirmative action and non-discrimination.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to successfully pass a thorough background and CORI check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree.
  • One or more years of post-baccalaureate experience as a live-in staff member.

The firm annual salary for this full-time, benefited APA position is: $36,000. Compensation includes housing, laundry, and a meal plan.
