The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University’s integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health and recreation. The Assistant Director for Health Education and Outreach is a newly developed position and is a core member of the Health Promotion Leadership team as well as the Health and Wellness leadership team. As part of the Health Promotion team, the The Assistant Director Health Education and Outreach is responsible for developing and implementing data-driven, evidence-based outreach strategies and education to the Syracuse University student population.

This position is responsible for the strategic direction of signature programs like the peer education program, Health Hubs, Wellness Leadership Institute programs supported by peer educators, and student-driven health communication content development. More specifically, this position works with colleagues across the University to reorient health and wellness outreach efforts to better support underserved student populations, address health inequities and improve access to health and wellness programs and services. The Assistant Director supervises a Peer Education Coordinator and Graduate Assistant. Qualifications

• A master’s degree in a related field, such as public health, health promotion, health education, health policy, or health communications is required.
• Three (3) plus years of experience in the field of wellness education and prevention with progressively increasing responsibilities. Some supervisory experience is preferred.
• Advanced certification such as Certified Health Education Specialist ( CHES ), Master Certified Health Education Specialist ( MCHES ), or Certified in Public Health ( CPH ), or certification eligible, strongly preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

• A strong background in the development of primary prevention programs in an institution of higher education.
• Experience leading a peer education program and engaging with students from a wide range of identities and backgrounds.
• Familiarity with college student wellness concerns such as alcohol and other drugs, mental health and wellness, high-risk behavior, sexual and relationship violence, etc.
• Experience developing and implementing engaging educational workshops and trainings, grounded in research and utilizing best practices.
• Experience conducting literature reviews, program evaluations, interpreting findings, and developing plans to programmatically and strategically respond to the findings.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of health promotion and behavior change theories and models, as well as implementing evidence-based programs/initiatives.
• Knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education.
• Excellent presentation/oral, written and interpersonal communications skills, including communicating data and assessment findings to a wide array of audiences.
• Demonstrated understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and application of these principles within the context of health promotion and social justice.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for developing and implementing data-driven, evidence-based outreach strategies and education to the Syracuse University student population.
• Establish and maintain partnership with departments that support underserved student populations, to better support these populations, address health inequities, and improve access to health and wellness programs and services.
• Participate on appropriate Health and Wellness committees including the health and wellness leadership team and health communications committee.
• Establishes the strategic direction of signature programs like the peer education program, Health Hubs, Wellness Leadership Institute programs supported by peer educators, and student-driven health communication content development. Supervises the peer education coordinator and graduate assistant, which includes weekly supervision meetings, setting goals for performance and deadlines, and organizing workflow to support signature programs and outreach strategies.
