Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Dean of the School of Education ( SOE ), a successful applicant will promote and lead diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ) efforts in the School. This position supports the School by meeting the needs of students from historically excluded populations and working to increase the diversity of the educator workforce using DEI best practices. These efforts include implementing DEI best practices for recruitment and retention of students in SOE programs; leadership through engaging in the SOE strategic plan; securing grants that support historically excluded populations; and enhancing partnerships with PK-12 schools, UW-L campus, UW System institutions, and community members on this work.

Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit

The School of Education focuses its programming on ensuring that all teacher candidates demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions consistent with exemplary professional practice. Through partnerships with regional school districts and outstanding veteran educators, the School of Education provides teacher candidates with high-quality experiences in schools as a means to advance the teaching profession. Finally, the School of Education and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse are committed to inclusive excellence, and values diversity in both its faculty and student populations.

Required Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in education or closely related field
● Demonstrated leadership in diversity and equity efforts
● Professional experience relevant to PK-12 schools and schooling
● Experience with identifying educational challenges and barriers faced by historically excluded populations
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents supporting historically excluded populations
● Evidence of effective organization and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

● Master’s degree in education or a closely related field
● At least 3 years of experience as a PK-12 educator
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents
● Experience with advising, recruitment, and/or retention in higher education
● Significant involvement with students, communities, and families from historically excluded populations
● Experience securing and managing grants
● Prior experience and working knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate, Transferology

Duties to Support Responsibility

● Sustain and enhance relationships with alumni, school counselors, community leaders, and other stakeholders interested in diversifying the educator workforce
● Foster relationships with prospective students from historically excluded populations who are interested in a career in education through a variety of platforms, working collaboratively with Office of Admissions, Office of Multicultural Student Services, and the SOE Communications Specialist
● Engage in middle/high school visits, educational fairs, community events and other outreach events that facilitate outreach to students from historically excluded populations
● Participate in on-campus recruitment activities including Campus Close Up, Scholar Day, School of Education Day, campus visits, etc. in collaboration with the SOE Academic Services Director
● Develop programs and communication tools for the recruitment of prospective students from historically excluded backgrounds who are interested in a career in teaching (i.e., Grow Our Own Teacher Diversity ( GOO -TD) program, Educators Rising, etc.)
● Work collaboratively with the UWL Office Research & Sponsored Programs and the SOE Dean’s Office to seek to identify and secure external funding sources including government agencies, corporations, and foundations in support of student success

● Serve as a co-advisor/mentor with the major academic advisor regarding academic planning and progress for students from historically excluded populations in collaboration with the SOE Academic Services Director
● Connect students with opportunities for academic and personal development including student organizations, conferences, workshops, grants, scholarships, etc.
● Connect students with campus and community resources (i.e., Office of Multicultural Student Services, Pride Center, Financial Aid, etc.)
● Participate in freshman and transfer advising and registration events in collaboration with the SOE Academic Services Director
● Serve as the advisor for the Multicultural Education Student Organization
