Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
VCU HR is seeking an innovative Talent Strategy Director with a passion for executive search, talent acquisition, and employee retention and engagement programs such as career and succession development, executed with VCU’s values of diversity, equity and inclusion at the forefront. This position leads a team of talent strategy specialists and a career development program manager, necessitating both strategic leadership as well as execution of the programmatic functions assigned.

About half of the position’s time will be spent leading the talent strategy programs and the other half will be spent as an executive search leader who shares VCU’s drive for excellence. This role is critical to VCU’s rise as a pre-eminent urban, public research university committed to equitable access to social, economic and health success. Candidates must demonstrate a high degree of project management proficiency, critical thinking ability, and effective organizational skills. Expert judgment, grace under pressure, and personal resilience are important qualities for success in this key role.

Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in HR related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
  • Significant experience with talent management and talent acquisition programs to include at least 2 years of experience with full lifecycle senior management recruiting and at least 2 years of experience leading diverse talent teams.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading, coaching, and developing high performance teams – truly cares about the wellbeing of team members.
  • Ability to work with both big picture and execution; comfortable contributing to strategy discussions but also “rolling up your sleeves”
  • Focus on candidate and employee experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equality and track record of embedding this commitment into talent acquisition and management programs.
  • Experience creating and implementing talent strategies in a large, growing, and complex organization
  • Expertise as a specialist or generalist in leading two or more talent management processes, including but not limited to succession planning and management, career pathing, knowledge management, mentoring
  • Track record of developing an active, diverse talent network in support of executive search/recruiting.
  • Excellent project management skills -setting, meeting, communicating timelines and goals.
  • Experience working in a role where multiple projects and competing demands are the norm.
  • Experience using process improvement and strategy to improve and drive programmatic outcomes.
  • Ability to adapt communication styles across multiple stakeholder groups with excellent client consulting and partnership skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of assessment, selection and development of high-potential talent
  • Ability to build trust, credibility and respectful, collaborative relationships; and to influence up, down, and across
  • Tactfully challenges the status quo and incites constructive debate and conversation- proven digital and innovative approaches to build new ways of working
  • Proven ability to understand and utilize data and analytics to make business/talent decisions
  • Uncompromising integrity
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Masters’ degree in human resources development, organizational behavior, business administration or public administration with HR concentration or related discipline.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in Executive Search preferably within leading executive search firms or relevant experience in inhouse executive recruitment
  • Deep knowledge and experience with succession management processes
  • Desire to exceed expectations.
  • Ability to challenge in a non-confrontational manner and to accept constructive criticism. Must be level-headed and cool under pressure.
  • Sound understanding of leadership competencies frameworks and competency-based interview methodologies
  • Learns quickly and adapts to new problems and situations
  • SHRM or SPHR credentials
