Position Description:

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Housing and Residential Life (Director), the Associate Director for Residential Life is responsible for overseeing the daily leadership and implementation of the educational and operational facets of the Residential Life program within on-campus housing. On-campus housing is located on Main Campus, with eight traditional residence halls, two suite style halls, and two apartment complexes housing over 2,572 students and East Campus with 1,064 students in an apartment community. Responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Director in support of the mission of the Department of Student Housing and Residential Life and serves as a member of the departmental senior management team. The primary areas of responsibility are professional and paraprofessional staff supervision, programs and events, community standards, staff training, care and concern for students, leadership development. In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director for Residential Life is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations for Student Housing and Residential Life with the Associate Director of Facilities and Planning and the Associate Director of Operations and Finance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Leadership and Supervision:
This position will provide servant leadership and role modeling to the Residential Life team and SHRL department to promote student and staff development, customer service, inclusivity, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Assists in the overall administration of Student Housing and Residential Life programs and services in conjunction with the Director, Associate Director of Facilities and Planning, and Associate Director of Operations and Finance
  • Directly supervises, trains, develops and evaluates two Assistant Directors for Residential Life and one Coordinator of Community Standards. Indirectly supervises six professional Residential Life Coordinators and 72 Resident Advisors. This position will also supervise, train, develop and evaluate any additional Residential Life positions created through growth and new construction.
  • Develops agendas and regularly conducts meetings with Residential Life personnel.
  • Facilitates the effective development of a cooperative and collaborative working relationship among professional and student staff members.
  • Prepares and allocates a significant portion of the departmental budget and directs spending within assigned areas.
  • Assists in the development of Student Housing and Residential Life outcomes, goals, and objectives.
  • Oversees the coordination of processes and strategies for professional and paraprofessional staff recruitment and selection. Responsible for the recruitment and retention of students and professional staff reflective of the diversity of the student body.
  • Oversees the design and facilitation of intentional and comprehensive training programs for professional and paraprofessional staff. Provides support for the evaluation of paraprofessional staff members.
  • Assists with campus recruitment programs and other special university-wide events as needed on behalf of Student Housing and Residential Life.
  • Collaborates as necessary with the Office of Student Conduct, Student Engagement and Leadership Development, First-Year Experience, Recreation, Career Development, Personal Growth and Counseling Center, C.A.R.E. Team, University Police Department, and other relevant departments.
  • Prepares reports as necessary for the Director regarding department activity.
  • Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the Student Housing and Residential Life program.
  • Identifies issues of area or departmental concern and takes initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
  • Serves actively on departmental and other University committees/task forces, as assigned.

Community Development and Co-Curricular Engagement: This position will work collaboratively with other SHRL staff and campus partners to facilitate a residential experience that promotes relationship building, community, a sense of belonging, and inclusion.

  • Works in coordination with the Director and Senior Coordinator for Residential Academic Initiatives for the overall development and collaborative implementation of the Residential Experience Plan for the campus residential community.
  • Responsible for the integration of university academic support efforts, student success initiatives, student retention efforts, and cultural diversity within the residential environment.
  • Collaboratively designs and implements a strategic residential learning strategies, including but not limited to large-scale and small-scale programming, passive programming, Living-Learning Programs, and other related initiatives to promote faculty, staff, and student involvement.
  • Implements co-curricular strategies, including residential curriculum, programming, etc., that are consistent with the University Vision Statement, and the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Student Housing and Residential Life missions.
  • Facilitates effective ongoing formal evaluation of programmatic efforts to insure they are meeting the goals of Student Housing and Residential Life and Student Affairs.

Behavior and Crisis Intervention: This position will serve as the functional lead for behavioral response and policy enforcement with respect to care-centered and educational approaches.

  • Responsible for the oversight of the Student Housing and Residential Life community standards process, including communication about departmental expectations in reference to resolution of student violations of community standards. Serves as a resource and referral for Student Housing and Residential Life staff in advanced conduct issues with authority to sanction housing removal.
  • In partnership with the Director, serves as the main crisis response manager for the department. Responds to the needs and problems of residents in a conscientious, appropriate, and timely manner.
  • Resolves severe or sensitive student or parental concerns and makes a report of resolution, as appropriate, to the Director of Student Housing and Residential Life, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs and/or President.
  • Serves in the Administrator on Call rotation.
  • Intervenes and assists in the resolution of staff and student concerns and emergencies, which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
  • Provides Director with timely and appropriate information as it relates to students experiencing problems and/or incidents in the residential community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the student development theory and practices, as well as procedures, management and activities of an on-campus housing program. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions. Must possess strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Ability to train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Must have the ability to sensibly manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints, including those of a sensitive nature. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or a related field including experience with counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution AND at minimum four years of progressively responsible post-graduate professional student services work experience managing and coordinating a Student Housing and Residential Life program experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above.

Experience supervising live-in professionals and will have contributed substantially to the development and management of a residential life program. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of partnership, innovation, sustainability, community, diversity, service, vision and excellence. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community service.

Compensation and Benefits:
The hiring salary for this position is $74,000 to $80,000 commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits.
