Department Summary

The mission of the Office of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) is to support holistic academic services through various departmental programs and resources that promote equity, retention, timely graduation, and student-defined success for all undergraduate students. UGS supports the development, improvement, and maintenance of strong undergraduate programs and related policies. It provides leadership and input, as appropriate, for changing, enhancing, or improving existing programs and policies. UGS also provides leadership in the development of academic support programs. Our advising teams consist of Advising and Academic Services and provide academic advising and guidance for our first time-freshmen and the College Advising Team, which provides the same for continuing and transfer students.

Job Summary

The Professional advisor position at CSUSB assists students in the development and implementation of meaningful academic, personal, and career plans that are strengths-based, equity-minded, and compatible with their individual goals. The key goals of academic advising are 1) timely graduation, 2) knowledge of university policies and procedures and engagement with resources, and 3) knowledge of personal, academic, and career options and pathways.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES:
  • Build relationships with advisees. Provides 1:1 and group academic advising to undergraduate students;
  • Works directly with students to discuss major program requirements, create academic plans (myCAP), review and educate students on how to read and understand their PAWS, and provide direct services to students;
  • Introduce and refer students to campus resources, when appropriate;
  • Assist students in identifying and articulating graduation and educational goals;
  • Stay informed of program and major requirements pertaining to academic advising collaborates with college faculty and department chairs;
  • Identify and encourages student engagement in activities/programs that compliment students' academic preparation for a career;
  • Provides direct support peer advisors by providing ongoing training and professional development, answering questions, and providing feedback on work/projects/tasks;
  • Campus Partnerships and Events;
  • Participate in campus events such as orientation, convocation, Coyote One-Stop, and others as they arise;
  • Delivers workshop presentations to students;
  • Collaborates with advising teams campus-wide;
  • Attends UAAC, Navigate, and/or other advising related platform events, advising council meetings, and committees.

Employment Status: This position is full-time, exempt and probationary (with the possibility of converting to permanent).

This recruitment is to fill five (5) vacancies.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications
  • Applicants must possess a working knowledge of applicable university and federal policies and procedures.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the ability to gather and analyze data, reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Applicants must possess the ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Applicants must possess a working knowledge of correct English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Applicants must possess a working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Applicants must possess fundamental writing skills and effective communication skills with the ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • The ability to write, speak and read other languages is desired.
  • Applicants must have a working knowledge of computer software applications.

  • Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's degree required from an accredited university in Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field AND the equivalent of two years of professional experience in admissions, one of the student services program areas, or related field.
    • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree is highly preferred.
  • At least three (3) years of professional experience in providing direct services to students in a higher education environment and/or at least three (3) years working in a Student learning center, academic success center, or an academic advising center.
  • Demonstrated multicultural/cross-cultural competency and commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Salary:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,304/month

    Classification Salary Range: $4,304-$6,120/month
