Concordia University Chicago (CUC) invites applications for the full-time, exempt, position of Mental Health Counselor within the CUC Counseling Center. The Counselor is an enthusiastic supporter of Lutheran higher education who exhibits Christ-centered servant leadership and a dedication to student success. He/she is a licensed counselor with current registration in the state of Illinois. This position assists in the coordination, implementation, and management of a comprehensive counseling center program (therapeutic, developmental, and educational) and campus outreach activities. This is a 10 month position (August - May) on campus in River Forest, IL and reports directly to the Director of the Counseling Center.



  • Provides mental health assessment, crisis intervention, short-term therapy, periodic support groups, case management, and referral services for students
  • Serves as a campus resource on mental health issues, and other issues related to the wellness of the community; Works alongside the Director of the Counseling Center on matters pertaining to the general welfare of all students
  • Works with the Director of the Counseling Center to develop and maintain effective systems for comprehensive mental health crisis intervention services
  • Provides consultation services for campus personnel, especially for those who serve within the Division of Student Life
  • Implements case management responsibilities: development and maintenance of student records and files
  • Assists the Director of the Counseling Center with the supervision/mentoring of graduate level counseling interns


  • Works collaboratively with Student Life staff to provide programming and support services that help to educate, aid in prevention, and create awareness on mental health topics relevant to diverse student populations
  • Provides education and training to student leaders and student staff members (i.e.- Resident Assistants, Public Safety officers, etc.) on mental health resources and support options


  • Assist the Director of the Counseling Center in terms of regular assessment and evaluation of services and programs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Educate/promote the CUC Counseling Center to parents and students at Jump Start, Weeks of Welcome, etc.

Skill Sets:

  • Enthusiastic supporter of Lutheran higher education and the mission, vision, and core values of Concordia University Chicago
  • Sensitivity to working with diverse populations
  • Experienced in suicide assessment and intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to create a trusting and supportive rapport with students
  • Possesses knowledge and experience in providing services to those affected by relationship violence, sexual assault/abuse, eating disorder behavior, self-injurious behavior, anxiety, and depression
  • Knowledge of current campus mental health issues, protocols and best practices
  • Demonstrated record of ethical practice
  • Effective communication skills, including: verbal, written, interpersonal, and public speaking

Minimum Experience Preferred:

  • Licensed to practice in the State of Illinois
  • 2+ years of post-graduate clinical work experience in mental health

Education Requirements:

Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field required
