Job Description

The Finance Director of the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES), in The Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering (ECE), College of Engineering (CoE), is responsible for oversight of all financial and research-specific business activities of CPES, as well as for several administrative, personnel, and facilities aspects of the center. The Finance Director reports to the CPES Director, who leads the CPES Executive Board (EB), and governs the complex operations of the center, which involve nearly 100 international graduate students and visiting scholars, 12 faculty, 10 staff members, large state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, a research program of several million dollars, and a global industry consortium with more than 80 companies.
The CPES Finance Director is expected to provide leadership and assure an effective operation of the center in all financial aspects. He/she will perform tasks, will set and accomplish goals, and will work closely with the CPES Director and EB. This position requires a broad knowledge of the University and CPES operations and procedures, and the ability to manage equally urgent tasks and the daily operations of the center, which are tightly tied to the inherently dynamic nature of its research enterprise. Specifically, CPES is constantly engaged in collaborative research programs with state and government agencies, companies, and universities from around the world, and the Finance Director must communicate regularly with equivalent and/or higher-level personnel within those entities, ensuring smooth operations with utmost professionalism.

Required Qualifications

Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, or a combination of Bachelor of Science in business, finance, or accounting, and experience exceeding an MBA degree. Demonstrated comprehensive and involved administrative and financial experience with university, the federal government, and industry policies, procedures, and contract research. Advanced computer skills and demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint computing services. Proven experience adapting to a variety of software collaboration platforms. Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Proven ability to cultivate positive working relationships, build and maintain a team-based approach and gain the trust and respect of all levels of the center’s internal and external constituency. Comfort with ambiguity, and a demonstrated ability to perform duties with a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, flexibility, discretion, judgment, diplomacy, and tact. Ability to multitask, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills. Ability to maintain strict accuracy and be very detail-oriented.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated international exposure and experience of collaborating with people and institutions from many countries with different languages and cultures. Proven editing and writing skills. Prior experience at Virginia Tech or other higher education environment. Prior experience working in an engineering research environment.
