Position Summary:

The Power Plant Operator is an entry-level position with working responsibility within the Walnut and Charter Street Heating Plants. The role's technical duties and responsibilities include:

The monitoring, operation, adjustment, maintenance and repair of technical equipment including:
a. High pressure boilers
b. Chillers
c. Air compressors
d. Steam turbines
e. Fans
f. Pumps
g. Generators
h. Condensate polishers
i. Water treatment systems and related equipment
j. Electronic monitoring controls including our Digital Control System (DeltaV) network.

The duties and responsibilities for this role are usually performed under close supervision.

Knowledge and Skills
1. Knowledge of workplace procedures for lockout-tagout, and confined spaces.
2. Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of gas and oil fired steam boilers, steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges, automatic boiler controls, and their related equipment.
3. Knowledge of the operation of computer controlled centrifugal chiller, steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges, automatic controls, water pumps, chemical pumps, and related equipment.
4. Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of mechanical refrigeration units (chillers) and their related equipment.
5. Knowledge of the operation and use of safety devices.
6. Knowledge of feed water heaters, feed water pumps, condensate pumps and forced draft fans.
7. Knowledge of generating equipment.
8. Knowledge of water testing and water softening.
9. Skilled in making minor repairs and adjustments on power plant equipment.
10. Skilled in technical workplace communication, including interpersonal skills.
11. Ability to exercise a strong sense of priority and time management.
12. Ability to problem solve and balance competing priorities.
13. Ability to learn and properly apply methods and techniques for the correct and safe performance of fairly complex physical and mechanical tasks and materials handling operations.
14. Ability to assist with record keeping tasks in a neat and accurate manner, such as fuel inventory, maintenance records, etc.
15. Ability to accept direction and supervision to perform tasks in a prescribed and responsible manner.
16. Ability to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with customers and co-workers.
17. Ability to present and maintain a neat physical appearance.
18. Ability to perform manual labor such as lifting and carrying heavy objects, working on feet for sustained periods, and to work in a hot, cold, and dirty environment.
19. Ability to work in confined, dusty, dirty spaces and work in extreme hot and cold conditions. Wear a DWD approved breathing apparatus, and perform heavy manual labor including frequent lifting up to 75 or more pounds.
20. Ability to present a cooperative attitude towards supervisor and co-workers.
21. Ability to perform climbing, bending, crawling, stooping, pushing and pulling as required
22. Ability to work hours in excess of the normal work shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
23. Ability to maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license and a motor vehicle record that meets UW Risk Management Standards to drive State of Wisconsin owned vehicles (non-essential function).



Work Schedule:

Rotating Shift: 6am-6pm, 6pm-6am
Some holiday, weekend and overtime hours are required to meet the needs of the operation.

This position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
