Job Summary:

Directly responsible for the oversight of academic and compliance staff with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics: student learning, retention and graduation, & compliance. In addition, has the responsibility for ensuring continued success in APR scoring. Implements and coordinates all aspects of the academic support programs for the coeducational intercollegiate athletic program. Works in support of the student athlete academic services (SAAS).
This position specifically supports the mission of the University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by assisting in institutional compliance with NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:
Oversees and coordinates ICA athletic academic coordinators and compliance staff, reporting to the Athletic Director, to meet the following:
• Responsible for the supervision and oversight of the compliance staff.
• Responsible for administration and operational support of sports assigned by the Director of Athletics.
• Manages budget including, but not limited to, resource development, professional development of staff, student programming.
• Responsible for managing a staff of no less than three full-time employees and also including part-time Individual Learning Specialists, interns and student workers. Will complete no less than annual job assessments and is responsible for staff development.
• Responsible for hiring staff, articulating explicit expectations, providing on-going feedback and mentoring and—where appropriate—recommending staff who do not fulfill the position requirements for termination.
• Responsible for a staff that is accessible to students, particularly in times of substantial academic workload (i.e. registration, final exams, graduation, summer orientation and bridge programming…)
• Prepares reports pertaining to position responsibilities.
• Responsible for no less than weekly communication with Head Coaches in articulating support strategies for students, updating student performance and progress.
• Responsible for working directly with the Academic Advisors to ensure students are registered for courses that satisfy Miami University, Mid-American Conference and NCAA eligibility and that students maintain satisfactory progress requirements towards a degree.
• Coordinates and prescribes support systems and services for student athletes (i.e., tutoring, learning disabilities, student counseling, SEP, academic support courses, etc.)
• Counsels and advises student athletes regarding coursework, coping strategies, social environment and graduation.
• Develops and implements systematic application of learning interventions and study strategies in the areas of time management, learning style, critical reading, note taking, test taking, etc. for individual students as needed.
• Monitors and supervises academic progress of assigned student athletes through one to one meetings and coordination of support services.
• Responsible for communicating with faculty as appropriate including, but is not limited to, student travel, student performance and assessment, student strategies, research opportunities and monitoring academic evaluations.
• Teaches EDT 110 “Learning Strategies for College Success” and SLM 112 “Transitional Skills for the New College Student”.
• Assists student learning needs and develops, implements and monitors academic success plans with small groups and individual students.
• Facilitates the organization and implementation of individualized study and review sessions for students.
• Responsible for working directly with Compliance Directors, the Faculty Athletics Representative, and the Registrar’s Office to monitor and create individual plans for students within NCAA policies and requirements.
• Serves as a liaison and referral source for University resources, i.e., Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity, Student Counseling Center, and Career Services, etc.
• Leads the academic support staff in gathering and analyzing relevant data that tracks student performance and provides insight into successful strategies and profiles.
• Meets individually when, and as time permits, with student recruits and parents during the recruiting process to explain academic support services.
• Prepare reports pertaining to position responsibilities and semester grades.
• Assists with delivery of program services during Summer orientation, Summer Bridge and Registration Program and special admission process.
• Implements and maintains the academic commitment of the Champs/Life Skills Program.
• Willingness and ability to travel with athletic teams.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree by first date of employment in education, college student personnel, academic advising, academic counseling or a related field;
- 3-5 years’ experience in academic advising, student academic assessment, scholastic enhancement programs, compliance, or closely related experience;
- Experience working with college students and diverse populations.

Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and promote an inclusive work environment; willingness and ability to be on-call, particularly in times of substantial academic workload (i.e. registration, final exams, graduation, summer orientation and bridge programming.)
