Summary/Objective

The Qualitative/Survey Research Methodologist supports the skills initiatives for the Center for Teaching, Research & Learning (CTRL). This position aligns with CTRL’s mission of inspiring, mentoring, and celebrating faculty by facilitating the application of advanced qualitative, survey, and mixed-methods approaches in teaching, research & learning. Responsibilities include providing one-on-one consultations and workshops, researching and promoting emerging pedagogical innovations, and administering the university’s qualitative and survey research software packages.

Essential Function
  • Develop and provide one-on-one and group consultations, and workshops to enhance teaching, research & learning at AU.
  • Collaborates with AU faculty members to design and execute faculty-driven projects related to teaching, research & learning.
  • Promote inclusive pedagogy and universal design in learning in teaching, research & learning.
  • Creates, manages, evaluates, or participates in additional projects and/or initiatives enhancing use of emerging trends in teaching, research & learning.
  • Collaborates with staff in CTRL in the design, development, and implementation of training initiatives, events, and programs related to teaching, research & learning.
  • Pedagogical Research: Researches, learns to use, and creates recommendations on emergent educational technologies, online learning trends, research methodologies, and/or innovative pedagogical practices related to teaching, research & learning.
  • Explores and pursues opportunities for external funding for initiatives within the position’s portfolio.
  • Conducts evaluation of initiatives in which the position has played a lead role.
  • Other Duties: Supports the recruitment, hiring, software & hardware training, scheduling and performance evaluation of 2–5 part time student consultants.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Work Environment
  • The Qualitative/Survey Research Methodologist reports to the Executive Director in CTRL.
  • The position works collaboratively with all full-time staff members in CTRL, as well as with part-time staff members in CTRL.
  • In addition, the position works directly with faculty across the AU campus and, as appropriate, as a CTRL liaison with staff in meetings or working groups with relevant administrative units and programs on campus.

Required Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in a qualitative, survey, or mixed-methods, research-intensive field or equivalent in education, training, and experience.
  • 3-5 years of relevant prior work experience.
  • At least two years’ work experience in higher education working with faculty.
  • Knowledge of current developments in higher education pedagogy.
  • Must be an expert either in qualitative, survey, or research methodology, concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Must be able to analyze and interpret data from various sources and compile reports, charts, and tables based on established statistical methods.


Required Education and Experience - Continued
  • Expertise with the NVivo and Qualtrics software packages (experience with Provalis, ATLAS.ti, and other research software is a plus).  It is expected that other research application software packages will be mastered while serving in the position.
  • Familiarity with a variety of software programs, including WordPress and research software.
  • Ability to articulate and carry out technology-based educational vision with tact, diplomacy, and interpersonal savvy.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively.
  • Flexibility in reordering project priorities as needed.
  • Excellent research, organizational, interpersonal, and oral/written English skills.
  • Demonstrated creativity, initiative, and strong work ethics.


Preferred Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in a qualitative, survey, or mixed-methods, research-intensive field or equivalent in education, training, and experience.

  • Familiarity with computer systems and tools, such as learning management systems (e.g.Canvas), content management systems, web editing, learning and collaboration tools available through Google and/or other online companies, and productivity tools such as Adobe Creative Suite.

  • At least one year’s experience working directly with faculty in conceptualizing, and designing discipline-specific training in teaching, research or learning.
