Ball State University invites applicants for a new and innovative position, Assistant Dean of Media and General Manager of BSU Public Media. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Communication, Information, and Media this person will be responsible for implementing and assessing Ball State University’s bold, expanded vision of media. Ball State is expanding reliable, fact-based journalism; programs and broadcasts of our student activities; and telling our community’s stories to inform, entertain and inspire. Our efforts will leverage content producers and distributors across student media, our media educational experiences and BSU Public Media, while retaining each as editorially independent. These efforts also build on our University’s mission to provide an excellent educational experience for our students through immersive learning, and mobilizing and leading partnerships that revitalize and sustain our community and region. Position Function

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Communication, Information, and Media, the Assistant Dean of Media and General Manager of BSU Public Media is responsible for implementing and assessing Ball State University’s bold, expanded vision of media. The Assistant Dean will directly oversee BSU Public Media (Indiana Public Radio and Ball State PBS ) and coordinate an advisory council. In partnership with members of the BSU community, the Assistant Dean will leverage content producers and distributors across student media, our media educational experiences and BSU Public Media, while retaining each as editorially independent to provide fact-based journalism, programs and broadcasts; and tell our community’s stories to meet the needs of East Central Indiana and the state overall.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

At least five years of leadership experience in broadcast, media or media education. Demonstrated experience in budgeting and forecasting, fundraising, strategic planning, building community support, staff development, team building, leadership and management.

Minimum Other

Excellent writing and verbal communication skills; demonstrate experience in public speaking; ability to communicate to a vast range of constituents.

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred Experience

Over five years of experience in public broadcasting management or operations. Two years of management in a university setting. Three to five years of successful fundraising, major gift development, community leadership for a non-profit organization.

Provide leadership and the vision for the overall direction of Indiana Public Radio ( IPR ) and Ball State PBS that melds the mission of Ball State University and both stations as an outreach entity to communities we serve to address the increasing need and desire for local news that represents the diversity of the community.

Serve as inaugural chair of media advisory council consisting of university, community, and professional leaders. Coordinate the development and distribution of information about events and issues of consequence to the Ball State University and East Central Indiana communities ensuring equitable coverage in our representation of all communities, identities and groups.

As directed by the Dean, provide leadership in the exploration of new means by which BSU Public Media, in collaboration with other programs, departments, schools and initiatives of CCIM and Ball State University as desired, may assist news media operations throughout Indiana in delivering news and information to the resident of their local or regional news operations.

Provide leadership and guidance to all managers and personnel in areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, training and career development of personnel. Oversee all of the hiring documentation and processes.

Prepare annual budgets for each station. Estimate yearly revenue and allocate resources necessary to foster a well-organized planning process for short term and long terms financial goals. Oversee and monitor all accounting systems, funds, foundation accounts and grants. Provide leadership to the financial coordinator, serve as the official financial representative responsible for following documented university policies and procedures

Collaborate with managers, financial staff and members of the advisory council to generate revenue including underwriting, advertising and grants both internally and externally.

Provide project management and supervision for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting ( CPB ) reports, documents and processes that are required for the stations continued federal funding. Must work in cooperation with Ball State University Business Affairs, auditors, and to complete all aspects of the reports and submit in a timely manner to ensure the stations eligibility for Community Service Grants.

Ensure compliance with all FCC and other legal requirements of a broadcast facility; maintain and renew broadcast license of WBST 92.1 FM in Muncie, WBSB 89.5 FM in Anderson, WBSW 90.9 FM in Marion, WBSH 91.1 FM in Hagerstown, and WIPB -TV Channel 49 in Muncie, for Ball State University; set policies and procedures that fall within FCC compliance guidelines. Collaborate with FCC legal counsel.

Provide guidance and coordinate with the college and University Media Services Chief Engineer in the acquisition, implementation, maintenance and replacement of technology infrastructure and collaborate on new technologies.
