Statement of Job:

ThePublic Healthdepartment at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a Part Time Faculty position to teach BPH 339/MPH 539 Topics in Public Health: Substance Use Disorders. This course is cross-listed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students and runs from 9/11/2021to 12/8/2021on Wednesdays from 5-7:30. At this time, the class is scheduled to be live and face-to-face on the Portland campus.

Topics in Public Health: Substance Use Disorders: This course will examine the multiple facets of substance use disorders including the neurobiology of addiction, the diagnosis and treatment, and the societal impact. There will be a focus on factors leading to changes in substance use and how public health approaches and health policy can provide solutions

Faculty responsibilities include course preparation, course lectures and activities, meeting with students outside of class, developing and grading assignments, and submitting final grades. Because this is a cross-listed course, it is expected that graduate level assignments will differ in rigor and application of concepts from undergraduate assignments (this can be accomplished through differential grading requirements). All syllabi must comply with department standards for documentation and reporting to MPH accreditors.

Part time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior college teaching experience. In addition, USM employees have access to the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center (s) with their USM Card. USM also offers Part time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD), the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Public Health or closely related field with demonstrated expertise in substance use disorder programs
  • Prior teaching experience


Preferred:

  • Doctoral degree in Public Health or related field
  • Direct experience applying public health approaches to substance use prevention and treatment
  • Inter-professional mentoring or teaching experience
