Job Summary:
To provide oversight for all financial functions of Furman University, other than endowment management.

Job Description:

Job Duties:

Assists the Vice President for Finance and Administration in developing and implementing strategic short term, mid term and long term financial plans for the University.

Supervises the Director of Budget and Resource Management who directs the development, preparation and implementation of operational and capital budgets; coordinates the preparation of multi-year financial projections; and supervises the Director of Procurement and the Accounts Payable Manager.

Plans and facilitates the Trustee Financial Health and Resources Committee meetings each year.

Supervises the University's Controller, who has responsibility for the Financial Services Department,.

Supervises the Financial Systems Manager who has responsibility for developing, maintaining, and optimizing financial systems, particularly Workday FDM.

Supervises the Director of Auxiliary Services who has responsibility for dining services, bookstore, P2X print and mail services, Golf Course, Younts Conference Center, McAlister Auditorium, and the Child Development Center.

Monitors and evaluates business operations, including internal control and other financial policies and procedures, work-flow processes, and industry best-practices, to ensure effective, efficient, and consistent financial management.

Coordinates all debt activities for the university, including working with financial advisors and legal counsel; monitoring the university's debt structure and policies and making recommendations for changes; complying with continuing disclosure requirements; executing debt deals; and planning and facilitiating Trustee Debt Sub-committee meetings.

Monitors and coordinates working capital strategy for the university, including policy development, cash strategy, local bank relationships, and spending policy.

Acts on behalf of the Vice President for Finance and Administration, as requested and in his/her absence.

Completes performance review process with supervisor/employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.

Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information; including maintaining up to date information about the department and university.

Performs other duties as assigned. Relationships:

Daily contact with members of own work unit and immediate supervisor to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information and make suggestions.

Frequent contact with university's President, Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, and

Trustees to discuss mutual goals.

Frequent contact with Facilities, Academic Affairs, Admission and Financial Aid to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information and suggestions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Direct supervision of 4-5 employees. Indirect supervision of approximately 20 employees.

Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.

Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.

Reports To: Vice President of Finance and Administration.

Work is performed independently, with all final funding solutions recommended to the

Vice President for Finance and Administration.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree with 10 or more years experience in related field.

Professional credentials in the accounting profession.

Ability to work with confidential information and with financial transactions.

Experience in higher education budgeting and financial reporting.

Experience with spreadsheet modeling.

Ability to present financial and non-financial information clearly and logically both in writing and orally.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters Degree

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Work Conditions:
