  • Responsibilities:
    Responsible for the supervision and maintenance of shelved periodicals and books. Provides user assistance of multiple kinds at the Access Services public desk.

    In addition, manages all unit functions during opening Sunday hours of operation, including supervising student employees and overseeing building security. Identifies maintenance problems in Malpass Library and reports to appropriate campus entity.

    Collections Maintenance
    1. Uses the library's automated system (Alma) and the Library of Congress Classification System to ensure optimum stacks efficiency.
    2. Supervises the unit's periodicals maintenance procedures, monitoring timely collection of and accurate re-shelving of materials by unit staff.
    3. Plans and supervises shifting projects for the collections of over 1,000,000 volumes. Measures available shelf space and calculates the shifting required to alleviate overcrowding and assure usability of main book stacks, periodicals stacks, and media shelving.
    4. Designs and produces end labels, detailed stacks plans, and other signage to facilitate user access to all materials. Oversees accuracy of book collection maps.
    5. Oversees the daily maintenance of the periodicals collection including: shelving, shelf straightening, and shelf reading. Daily maintenance is of primary importance in making these collections accessible to patrons.
    6. Works with Unit Coordinator and e-resources and collections librarian to weed periodicals collection as necessary.
    7. Identifies and solves problems arising from inaccurate bibliographic information.
    8. Interprets policies and procedures and refers problems to Unit Coordinator.


    Public Services
    1. Supports the Access Service public service desks' circulation and information functions and provides assistance to users, in person by phone or e-mail; corrects errors and mitigates complaints and frustrations.
    2. Applies and explains the circulation procedures of WIU libraries and other libraries within the CARLI consortium.
    3. Instructs patrons on how to renew items, request material through ILL, and access and utilize their accounts in I-Share.
    4. Processes Interlibrary Loan requests to inform requester of status, retrieve material requested, and process for proper location on ILDS shelves.

    Administrative
    1. Identifies, investigates, evaluates and solves patron problems.
    2. Instructs and supervises student assistants performing routine periodical maintenance.
    3. Trains, instructs, and assigns work to student assistants in stacks area of circulation. Monitors their job performance to ensure consistency and high-level service.
    4. Assists Unit Coordinator in compiling unit statistics.

    Marginal duties
    1. Provides individual instruction in the use of library's databases.
    2. Assist with the responsibilities of other staff members during vacation, sick leave, and periods of staff turnover.
    3. Evaluates existing procedures and suggest changes and improvements where appropriate.


  • Required Qualifications:

    1. High school graduation or equivalent
    2. Any one or any combination totaling 6 months from the following categories:
    3. work experience in a library or equivalent setting or general clerical or office/clerical related customer service experience.
    4. college course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent
      • 30 semester hours equals six months
