Global Initiatives: International Student Advisor supports international students on campus by offering visa and immigration advising; serving as the primary point-of-contact for sponsored and exchange students and advising them on various aspects of student life; assisting with orientation and other programs for international students; and collaborating with other units on campus to provide support and advocacy related to the successful integration of international students into the Miami University community. Global Initiatives at Miami University has diversity as a core value and the International Student Advisor will be a member of a team that is building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable working and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty through programming that exposes constituents to a broad range of ways of engaging with the world and the diversity it presents.

Duties include and are not limited to:

  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Advise F-1 and J-1 students on issues related to maintenance of legal status in the United States
  • Utilize Sunapsis for case management, SEVIS reporting, and the processing of visa documents and other related paperwork
  • Advise and support international students on issues related to financial concerns, academic challenges, cultural adaptation, and general wellbeing
  • Handle admission of exchange students to Miami University and support them through all stages of the exchange process
  • Advise sponsored students and exchange students on various aspects of student life, including billing, enrollment requirements, and transcript issuance
  • Serve as primary point-of-contact for sponsors and exchange partners
  • Work closely with Education Abroad Advisor to ensure reciprocity of exchanges and to provide opportunities for interaction between in-coming and out-going exchange students
  • Assist with international student orientation, programs, and workshops as needed.

Required: Bachelor’s degree and one year of relevant work experience; Knowledge of SEVIS and student visa regulations; Federal regulations require that this position be held by a US citizen or US permanent resident.

Consideration may be given to candidates with a Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, International Education, or related field;        Experience as a DSO or ARO; Experience working with sponsored students and/or exchange students; Familiarity with Sunapsis.
