The Oncology Department seeks a Clinic Technician who will be responsible for independently coordinating blood and tissuebanking protocols to ensure proper collection and handling of samples as well as responsible forcollection and handling, and transporting of patient samples to ensure quality samples.

The Clinic Technician is responsible for ordering archival tissue from internal and external sources. They will maintain current documentation on all clinical trial procedures to adhere to clinical trial compliance, and serve as department liaison with outside support groups, i.e. pathology, radiology, and multiple research laboratories both in-house and third-party. This individiual will have the ability to anticipate daily changes in schedule, maintaining a smooth patient flow. This role uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Excellent phlebotomy skills; obtains clinical trial-driven blood samples, processes, stores, labels and ships, as appropriate per each individual clinical trial, ensuring quality samples.
  • Independently arranges courier service, as needed for transport of clinical trial blood and tissue samples.
  • Assists as needed with in-services for clinical support staff (phlebotomists, clinical associates, medical assistants, etc.) for each new clinical trial regarding applicable clinical details
  • Contacts clinical trial patients as appropriate with special instructions prior to upcoming tests/exams
  • Audits to ensure specimen quality assurance is consistently maintained throughout clinical trial
  • Oversees the use of EKG equipment and ensures the equipment is working properly.
  • Explains the function and process of EKG exams to patients prior to the test and attaches EKG electrodes to patients in order to monitor heart activity and removes them after tests are completed.
  • Attend allrequired staffmeetings.
  • Attend protocol SIVs.
  • Track all specimen collection and follow up visits.
  • Assist with scheduling research visits.
  • Meetwith supervisor asrequiredfor enrollment determination andindividual case problem discussions.
  • Perform accurate andtimely data collection onsource
  • Complywith allregulatory andinstitutionalrequirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires High School Diploma/GED. Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical/hospital setting in a direct clinical care role such as: phlebotomy, nursing assistant, medical assistant. Experience in handling blood-borne pathogens required. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer additional experience working in a lab environment.
  • Experience working in Oncology setting preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program required.
  • Current CPR certification required and must maintain certification for duration of employment.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (AAMA, RMA, NCCA) or Certified Nursing Assistant strongly preferred

  • Abilitytoproblem-solve andworkindependently are necessary.
  • Computerskills,willingnessto use paperless systeminthefield, and strong communicationandmotivational skills are amust.
  • Ability to interact and communicate professionally with faculty, staff and patients from diverse backgrounds in a culturally appropriate manner.

Patient satisfaction is paramount and the individual should be able and willing to do whatever it takes to exceed the patient’s expectations.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
