Central Connecticut State University invites applications for a full-time, Program Assistant (self-supporting) in the Center for Public Policy and Social Research. The incumbent in this position will assist the Executive Director in providing management and technical assistance in the daily administration of the CPPSR. Assist in the preparation and delivery of support services to the staff of the CPPSR.

Supervision Exercised:

May supervise student workers as assigned.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the design, development and implementation of the CPPSR administrative systems and procedures; manages the day-to-day business activities of the CPPSR.
  • Assists with fiscal management of the CPPSR by monitoring the budget, maintaining purchasing and inventory records; processing travel reimbursements and mileage reports; and maintaining other accounting records.
  • Creates and maintains databases for monitoring various grant and contract specific activities, costs or other functions. Prepares a variety of routine as well as ad hoc reports as needed.
  • Provides routine information to grantees and grantors regarding CPPSR programs, procedures and requirements. Refers grantees and grantors to appropriate CPPSR staff.
  • Provides administrative support for CPPSR hiring processes.
  • Under the direction of the CPPSR Director, researches and develops information needed to prepare program proposals and grant applications.
  • Acts as a liaison between the CPPSR Director and staff on matters pertaining to, but not limited to, accurate and timely dissemination of CPPSR Program communications.
  • Composes professional correspondence and other documents for review. Produces written reports and spreadsheets utilizing programmatic data collected via specialized client tracking databases, and other sources, to analyze specific data to facilitate continual program review and improvement.
  • Assists in the preparation and/or dissemination of publications and/or services for the marketing of programs and/or events and coordinates with media as well as other departments when appropriate.
  • Assists the Executive Director in the planning and implementation of training programs and/or symposiums.
  • In the absence of the Executive Director, conducts routine business such as referring clients to appropriate contacts, responding to client’s inquiries and providing brief program explanations as needed and resolving minor problems that may arise. May represent the University at required meetings and/or functions, as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to the above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one (1) year of general administrative and office management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish office systems and procedures; working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software, with proficiency in spreadsheet, database, publisher and word processing applications required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and to analyze problems as well as recommend effective solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with CPPSR staff, the university community and other agencies/organizations in a team environment required.


Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.

New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 70% of the population as White, 13% as Black or African American, 3% as Asian, and 0.2% as American Indian or Alaska Native. Currently 4.6% of New Britain’s population identify themselves in more than one racial category and 43% of New Britain’s population identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Fifty percent (50%) speak a language other than English in the home and 19% were born internationally. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rican and Poland or consider themselves to be from the African-American, Italian, or Irish ethnic backgrounds. In addition to all that greater Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Mass., two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.
