The Department of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor in Visual Communication Design (VCD). Start date: August 2022.

The department seeks a practicing designer who has demonstrated teaching and research expertise that complements existing faculty expertise and will provide a broad foundation for undergraduate and graduate design education—preparing students for the changing nature of design, work, and collaboration in the 21st century.

Visual Communication Design at the University of Notre Dame lays emphasis on the art, science, and practice of building platforms and experiences that create tangible communication between content and users through traditional and contemporary media. The VCD program offers instruction in areas of packaging, scale-graphics, UX/UI, social design, visualization of data, and user-centered design that explore research, process, and methods in design. The VCD program is established around human-centered design principles. The program focuses on building a deep empathy with stakeholders and solving wicked problems with contextual solutions that derive from a holistic vision. The design division (ID and Visual Communication Design) offers  MFA, BFA, and BA degrees, as well as a minor in Collaborative Innovation. The Minor is a dynamic catalyst for process-based, cross-disciplinary collaboration between various academic departments across the university. Design is part of a multi-disciplinary creative studies department that includes studio artists and art historians all committed to a collaborative teaching and learning environment within the context of a liberal arts education.

The Department of Art, Art History and Design (http://artdept.nd.edu) has twenty-four full-time faculty members and is located within the College of Arts and Letters. The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain the highest quality faculty, staff, and administration. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to building a culturally diverse workplace. We strongly encourage applications from female and minority candidates, and those candidates attracted to a university with a Catholic identity. Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or disabled qualified individuals, and requires affirmative action by covered contractors to employ and advance veterans and qualified individuals with disabilities in compliance with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a) and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a). Salary is competitive and includes a full benefits package.
