Under the direction of the Executive Vice President, and in close partnership with the Chief Science and Technology Officer, the Vice President of Research serves as an integral part of advancing the research agenda of the Knowledge Enterprise at ASU and is an essential member of the university leadership. The successful applicant will be a:

  • Strategic and executive level decision maker

  • Curious and collaborative leader who inspires and supports action by others

 

Essential Duties:

Vision and Leadership

  • Advance strategies to grow and diversify research expenditures from federal, state and philanthropic sources.
  • Develop recommendations on investment strategies to advance key research areas.
  • Evaluate research areas and associated capacity across the University for alignment with funding opportunities and advise on the pursuit of those opportunities.
  • Work in partnership with the academic unit Associate Deans of Research to support articulation and achievement of their research goals.
  • Develop and execute an inclusive strategy to maximize the research productivity of faculty at all levels of the university.
  • Serve as a contributing member of the ASU faculty, including individual research and teaching responsibilities.

Collaboration

  • Support academic unit recruitment of faculty to advance research initiatives.
  • Collaborate with units within Knowledge Enterprise and across the University to advance research goals.
  • Leverage ASU assets in Washington, D.C. to maximize success in advancing the research aspirations of ASU faculty.
  • Represent the University to external constituents including corporate, international, and clinical partners.
  • Interface with Northern Arizona University and University of Arizona to advance state tri-university research initiatives.

Managerial and Operational

  • Strategize and advance space allocation decisions with key stakeholders.
  • Oversee research centers and support units.
  • Supervise pre- and post-award services.
  • Serve as ASU’s research integrity officer.
  • Supervise and develop research policy and procedures.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to articulate a vision for ASU’s research mission.
  • Demonstrated respect and experience across multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead diverse and equitable teams.
  • Experience in working across academic units to achieve research outcomes.
  • Experience with federal agencies and funding mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with diverse donors including philanthropic, international, and corporate.
  • Knowledge of business development practices and financial principles in research.
  • Experience with research compliance and regulation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and administrative leadership managing faculty and staff.
  • Skill in development and delivery of presentations and public speaking engagements.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD or similar terminal degree, achievement in research and scholarship to meet the requirements for obtaining tenure and appointment as a full professor, and eight (8) years previous experience in a senior management role with responsibility for development and execution of strategic operational initiatives. Or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
