The Student Success & Equity Specialist, Sr functions as a core member of the Future Pirate Team, which plans, organizes, and facilitates OCC’s outreach and onboarding events and activities for all new students. The Student Success & Equity Specialist, Senior plays a prominent role in implementing onboarding strategies with the aim of increasing enrollment. The position works closely with the Manager and the Future Pirate Team to create innovative practices in supporting new students successfully transition to college (from application to the first day of class). The areas of focus include creating communication campaigns and coordinating events for first-year students. The position utilizes data and key metrics to make recommendations to improve enrollment processes. The position also collaborates with other departments and campus programs on events and activities that promote access for new students, especially for historically underrepresented students; aimed at increasing the number of students who apply and enroll.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Student Success & Equity Specialist, Senior is the specialized position providing decision support and work direction to classified, hourly staff and student workers in the day-to-day operations of the assigned program; provides outreach and onboarding activities and additional coordination of program offerings to students. The Student Success & Equity Specialist is the first level position assisting with outreach and collaborative efforts to secondary education for promoting pathways to college and careers.

E ssential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:

  • Provides some work direction in the day-to-day activities and operations of the Student Success and Equity Program (Future Pirate team) staff that collaborate to provide targeted services for students.
  • Advises, guides, and trains student leaders and organizations on resources available to students through the college’s Student Success and Equity Programs; coordinates and implements program promotion, evaluation, and assessments.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with faculty and staff to develop orientation services and programming that ensures student participation and creates a diverse, inclusive, and safe environment accessible to all.
  • Assists with the planning, forecasting, monitoring, and reconciliation of program budgets.
  • Provides training, guidance, and support to student organizations; recruits and retains members; follow protocols, college, and department policies and procedures; identifies access to campus and community resources for students.
  • Evaluates current programs and assess future needs; provides data and assessment reports as required that highlight program accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Collects data and information to create, prepare, and analyze reports to assist the Student Success and Equity Programs in identifying gaps in service, enrollment trends, and statistics, student issues related to specific stages of academic progress, and needs of specially targeted student populations such as but not limited to: Veterans, EOPS/Care, first-generation students, etc.
  • Coordinates program services, events, and special activities with other student functions and instructional support such as, but not limited to, educational planning, workshops, priority registration, and advising.
  • Facilitates and organizes the implementation of student services and support initiatives and tools to identify and provide outreach to students needing various levels of support to mitigate any potential ‘at-risk' and/or retention issues.
  • Works closely with Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, and Counseling and Assessment Departments to refer students for academic skills assistance including tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance, and support the successful onboarding of students. Assists students to connect with peers and work with support services such as counseling, financial aid, and targeted student resources.
  • Serves as a liaison to student service organizations outside the college; may attend meetings and gatherings to promote the college and student recruitment and enrollment efforts.
  • Identifies additional resources available throughout the community to enhance the student experience at the college; promotes those available resources to targeted student populations.
  • Creates, edits, and maintains marketing or information materials for all available resources to provide to students; updates college webpage with available resources, keeping information current and relevant to today’s student populations.
  • Researches other successful college student support programs to identify and apply best practices and events in support of student success and equity programs; provides recommendations to Director on potential opportunities for outreach or change to current policies and procedures.
  • Fosters and maintains relationships with college and community partners that provide services to support student retention, benefit student health and well-being, and provide opportunities for academic and professional growth.
  • Provides onboarding and peer support to student veterans through direct communication. Conducts needs assessments and provides access to resources and networking opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

Requires working knowledge of the concepts and legislation applying to student success programs including orientation, assessment, enrollment, advising, and retention strategies. Requires demonstrated knowledge of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Requires basic knowledge of data-driven methods to identify students who may be at risk of not continuing. Requires working knowledge of the transfer and occupational programs offered through higher education. Requires working knowledge of enrollment policies and procedures, graduation, and certificate requirements. Requires knowledge of mentoring and supporting learners from diverse backgrounds. Requires knowledge of and skill at using personal computer-aided applications for office productivity, data management, and preparation of communications materials. Requires sufficient math skills to read and understand basic statistical concepts and data relationships. Requires sufficient knowledge of and skill at using English grammar for written communications. Requires well-developed human relations skills to make presentations to student audiences, convey college life advantages, exercise patience, and facilitate discussions with students and faculty. Requires knowledge of federal and state benefits for military-affiliated students.

Requires the ability to communicate in a professional manner, in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, and staff. Requires the ability to respond to a diverse set of cultures, ethnicities, socio-economic groups, and interests.

Physical Abilities
The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources. Education and Experience
The position typically requires an Associate’s degree in a related field and three (3) years of program-based experience, working with student-centered programs, community, and college resources, preferably in a college setting. Additional post-baccalaureate education may substitute for some experience. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Requires a valid driver's license.

This is an IN-HOUSE ONLY - temporary, categorically-funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the needs of the department. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. (Salary Range EE-117)
