Research Animal Resources (RAR) seeks aRodent Veterinary Technician (Veterinary Technician) who will support Johns Hopkins researchers in the conduct of clinical management of rodent research animals and animal research studies, including but not limited to Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL-3) containment work like COVID-19.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Management and recording of rodent clinical cases independently.
  • Consultation with veterinarians on clinical case management.
  • Treatment of animals.
  • Communication of clinical cases with investigators.
  • Perform animal experimental techniques, including restraint; IM, IV, IP and SQ injections; blood and tissue collection; necropsy; anesthesia and analgesia; surgery techniques; behavioral studies, and animal breeding colony management.
  • Perform diagnostic lab techniques like in-house parasitology and basic microscopy.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​High school diploma/GED.
  • 1 year of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ALAT/LAT certification and/or licensed veterinary technician.
  • Work experience in use of animals in research.
  • Associate degree in related field.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • No known rodent allergies.
  • Able to work while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) like coveralls and PAPR.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent recordkeeping skills, and proficiency with use of computer programs, including spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to work independently but must be a team player, and able to cross train with other veterinary technicians, in order to provide cross-coverage as needed.
  • Must be able to work independently.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
